Best suggestion for location of a new IMNA event

i have been thinking… okay so now we’ve got IMAZ. does that mean that they are moving IMNA-west from CDA down to the desert SW so as to distance it from the hugely popular IMCAN only two months later?

continuing with the thought… that would leave us with an IM event in the… NE-LP, SE-FL, Midwest-WIS, NW-CAN and SW-AZ. So where does that leave the South central? Why not a spring or fall race in Arkansas, Oklahoma or Texas? I understand the need for local support and that the community that is picked needs to fit well with the IMNA ideals (this is not a forum for complaining about prices… let’s just talk location). But I think that a race in the south central would give a good balance to the distribution of races in the country.

Lastly, and kind of going back to the start, if they were to have “regional IM’s” not tied to a location but a general part of the continent, where would you like to see races put on?

My two cents on this… move IM-Midwest to either the UP of Michigan (very LP like, ezer hills though) or to the Traverse City region in the northern LP (lower and upper penninsulas). Both of these locations i feel would be an AMAZING scene for the setting of an Ironman.

give a shout out and also, any thoughts or support to the Traverse IM from the Michiganders (I am a TC native but Austin rocks)… Tom D?

have at it guys

No suggestions to add but did want to note that current speculation leaves IMFL out since there is no plans to renew this race for 2005. Let the speculation begin as to where in the South/Southeast IMNA will hold a fall event.

I was planning toward IMFL in 2005 but may be MOOing instead.

AZ provides an early-season venue. I still think they need a late spring race, say May in California. Ditch the 1/2 and make it a full.

IM North America race choices are governed by the calendar, not by region. They can fill up one a month if they wanted to – and I think they eventually will. A January race makes sense, too, but it would have to be in FL or Georgia.

I don’t know where it could be, but I know where it shouldn’t be. Oklahoma. The only restaurants here are fast food, so I don’t think there would be anyone out on the course to cheer on the athletes. Plus, the scenery is just god-awful. Maybe we could figure this thing out using the process of elimination. So, scratch OK off the list of possibles.

I don’t think IMNA has been mentioned but there are strong rumblings that an IM distance race will take place oklahoma city sept 05. The person that is talking about this is the type that can and will make it happen. The OKC Memorial marathon is a big success and this is the type of organization you can expect.

I don’t think they are doing away w/ IMCDA.

What a horrid thought.

No offense to any Okies on this board, but I’ve been to Oklahoma City and all I can say about the city and its immediate (and come to think of it, somewhat distant) environs is…

Damn!

A college friend of mine used to joke about getting chased by tumbleweeds while out running in OKC.

Austin is the logical choice. Hardcore tri community, great sports scene, legit course downtown. Word was they tried to get it there years ago, but Wisconsin (!?) won. C’mon, home of Lance, balmy temps make it good offseason… they had me at hello…

Hey TriWog…don’t cancel those IMFL plans just yet…can’t say who I know that is very much in the know but that person told me a new 2yr contract had been signed very recently. Seems it’s all good until 2006 now.

Running the bike course up and around the tip of the Keewenaw pennisuala would be fantastic, flat well paved and fast. For those of you unfamiliar with michigan geography the Keewenaw is the piece of michigan sticking out into lake superior.
