What types of dogs like to run most? What types dogs are the fastest?
German Shorthaired Pointers… Have had mine up to 17 miles and she didn’t even want water. She could have kept going for a couple more hours. Of course be careful with the heat not to over do it.
I’ll second that. A buddy of mine did a 50k with his German Shorthair, albeit winter time.
Border Collies are fast and can run forever so long as it’s not too hot.
GSPs, Vizslas, and Pharoah Hounds. All 3 can run forever.
Love my border collie… heat-sensitive but fantastic. The softest fuzziest snuggliest of the running dogs
Vizsla. We’re on our second. #1 was still running long at 12-ish years old, still wanted to til the day he died at 14.5. My inlaws are on #3. They’ve run with the family their entire lives. We almost bought a GSP so I wouldn’t hesitate with that breed either.
Edit: you asked about speed. Our last one held a 7:00 pace into the low double digit miles. 12 was probable the farthest we ever ran him. Our new one is only 4 months old so we don’t run with him yet.
Rhodesian Ridgeback. Can run forever. A guy I knew used to take his with him when mountain biking for several hours. The dog would fall behind on the down hill sections and then catch back up on the technical single track or uphill parts. Pretty amazing dog.

I’m a weim guy. Have taken mine up to 17 mi with a few water and potty stops. Pace was around 7:00-7:15/mi. She was much better off at the end than I was.
Weimaraner!!! I have two. They will never stop even after you are done. They will get some extra mileage out of you. You can borrow them for a couple weeks! Lol! They are awesome. Loyal great family dogs as well.
Heeler aka Australian Cattle Dogs. Love to run long distances, hike, swim.
Blue Heeler’s are compact, smart as hell and will run beyond Thunder Dome!!

If they have a strong hurding drive they will nip. Potentially a tough family dog.
I love my 2 Border Collies, but they are very heat sensitive.
If I were looking for a running dog, it would be a Vizsla. Similar temperament to a Border Collie (Both require extensive work and care- Not “set and forget” dogs - both NEED to be a part of the family). Intelligent, Loyal, strong hunter / runner.
teacup yorkies have the highest lactate threshold of any breed and their cadence is easily over 100rpm

Anybody got a Belgian Shepherd? Supposed to be great running dogs and also very trainable and good with children. Is on my dog wishlist for when my wife and I have made the necessary career and house moves to be able to look after a dog properly

This article by a saluki breeder talks about how he’d to a four minute test on his dogs, and he wanted them to go a full two miles.

I’ve got an Ibizan Hound, a close cousin of the Pharaoh Hounds. She’s an amazing runner off leash, but hates running 7-9 min./miles on leash, especially in the heat. We did a doggie 5k last Friday, and she held me back at the end as I ran 22:15.
Off leash, it’s a different story. She can mountain bike with me for hours and keep up on any terrain. She just hates running at a slow, constant speed.
My other dog is a whippet, which are supposed to be sprinters. But while I biked on a flat, gravel path, he ran 8 miles at 4:18 pace, including one mile at 2:49. He could have gone a lot faster for that mile but was limited by how fast I could ride my cross bike. Again, on a leash, he drags behind me.

Our family owned one of these dogs. Great family dog and had all the traits you mentioned. Really stunning when they run. Beautiful coat, but a little high maintenance from a grooming standpoint…similar to a longer coated BC. We own a Belgian Malinois now, think of them as their hyper active, ugly cousin with short, brown fur. Can run all day and still be climbing the walls at night.
So many breeds and so few years. Would like to own all of the breeds mentioned. GSPs, Rhodesian Ridgeback and one of my favorites, those little “pickup truck dogs” – blue heelers. Awesome dogs.
Boxers are great for cooler weather. Mine has run up to 14m in the spring/fall/winter with no problems however here in the south, a 5m run at a humid 75 degrees at 5am is her limit. Their short noses make it harder for them to breathe in warm humid air. My dog has no problems plodding along at 8min miles for double digits. We occasionally do intervals/fartlek’s and she has no problem keeping up. Ran her pretty hard in a dog friendly 5k once and she ran a 20:xx with no problem. She also has no problem running double digit 10min miles with my wife either. In the winter, the dog runs 5-6x a week, 25+ miles. Summer? Depends on how many times a week we get up to run at 5am, three tops.
Besides being a great running dog (temperature dependant), our boxer is one of the sweetest, smartest, silliest, friendliest, family first dogs I have ever had.
Whatever you get, make sure to feed them top quality dog food, not the crap at your Walmart or BiLo. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/5-star/ We use Wellness Complete Heath and have had zero skin/weight/energy issues (maaaaaybe a little gas issues)
