Read this thread and contacted Dan @ Premier shortly after reading @desert_dude 's comments (someone I’ve gotten to know and trust a little bit thru the years here on ST). Confirmed…a discount still exists for ST folks - I was less than $800 OTD. Received the disc yesterday and am super happy with what I can see and feel so far. Real test comes in May…
After comparison shopping across the main brands and the brands mentioned in this thread, from Zipp, DT Swiss, Swiss Side, Enve, FLO, HED, Evolve, Parcous, Reserve, etc. I ultimately settled on the AeroCoach.
I wasn’t looking for the best budget or value option, so much so as the best wheel, with secondary consideration for price.
There is some interesting commentary on the superiority of a spoked / faired wheel over a full carbon wheel. Despite my initial interest in full carbon, there is the concern that the stiffness puts extra strain on the tire (forcing the tire to take on a suspension role), and the faired / spoked wheels could be just as fast or faster while also having better rolling resistance / compliance.
I liked the reviews I read for Aerocoach, wanted hooked rims, a rim width compatible with 25 front and 28 rear tires, appreciated the available testing data (FWIW), and the 1 kg weight ! Yes I know the weight won’t matter that much but 200 g and 400 g heavier options were available and with the Scott Plasma already relatively heavy, for fun I wanted to get it closer to a sub 20 lb build. Separately it is pretty cool that Pogacar uses one after their team did independent testing.
Really keen to see what you think once you’ve got the wheel. Also how long until you get the wheel too.
If it had 20/21mm internal I think I’d be really confident the aerocoach was the way to go. What worries me is the reverse of your comments re rolling resistance, where with a narrow rim I suspect the tyre is standing up more and there is the need for more sidewall flex than if it was more domed on a wider rim. And so testing data may not translate exactly.
I’m really going out on a limb here, but I might guess that the Aerocoach will run better on the Vittoria tyres where some of the wider rims may work better with Continental range just because of the very different sidewalls.
Sweet! I’m jealous haha. I have the Flo with the aluminum rim (that they don’t sell any more), since 2017. It’s good for its price point, but if I was buying again aerocaoch would be my choice.
Yeah it would be fun to experiment with different tires and widths. I’m planning on running Conti GP 5000 25 front / 28 rear, with latex and TPU tubes. If / when I get toward KQ shape and am really looking for marginal gains I might switch to specific fastest tire and I’ll go tubeless, but I don’t want to hassle with tubeless for now.
Hey thank you and yeah, I was looking at doing FLO for the front and rear (I currently have a FLO rear carbon rim disk), but the FLO was nearly 400 g heavier than the Aerocoach. Since the Scott Plasma 6 is already heavy I wanted to go with lighter tires for overall bike weight, less so for the individual wheel weight.
Any others have thoughts/reviews about Princeton wheels, disc and/or trispoke? Not cheap, but not really much more than Aerocoach’s top wheels I don’t think?
Has anyone heard any reviews on yoeleo new wheel. I had heard decent reviews of their last gen of aerowheels, but nothing good or bad about the latest. Specs do seem a little to go to be true $1300 and sub 1000g
