Did anybody else the the “Best Ranger Competition” on OLN last night?
60 hours, one break, no medical help - These guys were tough. One solider competed with a broken ankle while another tore his knee ligament in the middle of the competition and kept going with a makeshift brace.
I was impressed and glad to see the ability of the soldiers we have protecting us. Amazing.
And to think, that guy only had the one knee ligament to start with. that is impressive.

I personally liked watching the team of brothers! hehe! Vananterps or soemthing like that. They were very good looking. Not to mention tough guys!

Man, based on my experience the SEAL/BUDS school at Coronado strikes me as the toughest thing in the military.
I’ll admit to being a bit of a SEAL groupie. I’m really impressed by those guys. I enjoyed working with then, competeing with them in adventure races all over the world and I always read all the SEAL books- big fun.
In a different life, I’d like to believe I maybe could have done that- but it is so hard. In particular, my aversion to cold water would have done me in pretty quick I bet.
I had to do some swimming in my job in the military, quite a bit in fact, with a lot of equipment and at night- but we didn’t *live *in the water like Naval Special Warfare.
In general, if it started from the water or ended in the water, the Navy and the guys with the gold trident were the ones who got the job. Because they are the best.
Now, if you’re talking about gathering intelligence in denied areas on land, well then, we could help you…
I’m up for some SEAL books to read. If you and/or Tom can list some of the best, that would be great.

I competed in 2001 and 2002. It was the best 6 days (3 days each time) of my life. In 2002 I got to meet Ollie North because he was doing a report for OLN at the time. The best part of the race is the huge, free BBQ and Beer dinner that is served to the competitors and families when the race is over. The best organized and toughest race I have ever done. Ranger Training Brigade does an awesome job of putting on a great event.

Now wait a minute - I went to Ranger school in the ARMY (class 90-10). How did your brother complete Ranger school in the Army, SEAL training in the NAVY and a likely AIR FORCE SERE school? Sounds fishy to me.

I’m voting a D-boy. I know a few. Nicest guys in the world. Mow each others grass, look after each others families, get the oil changed for each other etc when they deploy.

“Delta Force” or 1st Special Forces Operational detachment from Ft. Bragg is no “secret” as they are one of the govts. special counter terrorism forces OUTSIDE the U.S. (Naval special warfare the other). Army Special Forces (“Green Beret”) units are vastly different, focusing mainly on trianing foreign civilians/military than combat.
Most come from Ranger units (that focus primarily on combat at the battalion level) in the ARMY, but many also come from the National Guard even with recruitment posters at Guard Barracks!
Since they have to be ready for about anything, they do receive HALO, SCUBA, and lots of close combat house-to-house training - but it is not the same as SEAL training or being in/on a SEAL team. They also work closely with the Air Force SOAR unit.
Personel in “Delta Force” is NOT top secret or even secret (although I believe they are “classified”). Their missions are often top secret for many years though for security reasons.

Would you be irritated if you saw someone wearing a finishers shirt from an Ironman race that you knew did not? Does it really matter - of course not, but … just my opinion.
You probably just have your brother’s training and the military anacronyms/reality a bit confused as almost everyone does (even others in the military). I don’t think the 1st Special detatchment even was formed until after Vietnam in 1977 or something.
