what would you say are the best aero wheels for under 1500 bucks?
Anything by HED. HED 3 is particularly nice. The newly updated Jet wheels are worth a long hard look as are the Stingers if you want to go tubbie. The discs are nice but more susceptible to dings/dents than other makers’ wheels. Although the Alps is evidently going out of production it’s still an excellent choice too. Customer service is always excellent. Can’t go wrong with HED.
I don’t work for HED, nor am I sponsored… just a long time satisfied customer.
I second HED. Check out prices on trisports.com Usually very good. Great customer service at HED as well.
get some zipp 404s.
O
how much are 404’s?
depends on the application… Hills, Flats, lots of wind? How big are you? A few more factors here. Also do you want the best wheels or the best value?
im small, bout 5’2". it’s pancake flat here in louisiana
Get a 404 or H3 front and a Hed or Renn disc in the rear.
Here my recommedation, Assuming you can get 20% off . I personal use the Renn and love it. I sold a H3 Rear for my Renn. I do not like how much out of true the H3’s are. I always have to run my break fully open so it does not rub but I do love the fact it is bullet proof.
Hed3C Front $700 *20% = 550ish
Zipp808Rear - $1075*20off = $850
you might be able to find some for $1500. Retail is a little over.

American Classic 58s
Lightweight, rims as strong as Zipp 404 (same rims of course), great graphics, and pretty cheap
.
what I find most interesting is your handle and your question ?
see the semblance ?
A rear disc cover (<$80) or Renn disk. ($400-$650 I believe, depending on model)
ANY good front wheel.
You can mail me a check for 1/2 the difference of the $ you save as my “finders fee” ![]()
It would be good if you can test-ride a set of whatever wheels have been recommended so far. IMO, a HED3 front is a bit difficult to handle for a lightweight rider, unless you can TT very fast.
A 404 combo would be best i think, or consider wheels like the Corima Aeros, Planet X Pro Carbon 50s. Heavier but at least the rims are more durable.
Not trying to hijack, which cheaper rear wheel would be good to add a wheel cover? I have Ritchey rims on my bike right now. Are they good enough to use with the wheel cover or would I be better off buying something that would spin more freely? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott
Race only Tubbies?.. undimpled Zipp 404 rims laced on Cane Creek hubs.

Maybe not everyday use, but a little more frequent, go clinchers?.. Mavic Cosmic Carbones, about the same weight as Zipp clinchers but most swear by them as very durable.

Both about $1100 shipped.
I’m not a wheel expert so I can’t say what’s best but a set of Blackwell Research 100’s or a 100 rear and 50 front runs just under $1500 (and they’re supposed to be available in clincher soon if that’s your preference).
I bought a Hed Stinger 60/90 from Tom at Bikesport this past summer. It seemed to be the best bang for the buck. If I was going w/ a disc I would’ve bought a Renn disk and Stinger 60 up front.
If it is a clincher that you want a Renn rear and Hed Jet front will be way under $1500 and just about as fast as anything else out there. A jet 90 rear instead of the disk is also an option. The Jet can be had n 50, 60 or 90 mm depths so you can go as deep as you are capable of handling.
If tubular instead of clincher then I’d swap out the Jet for a Stinger.
Or you can look on EBay for a used set and get deals like this hed trispoke which looks pretty good.
The set that I have for sale in the classifieds.
