So which race had your best finish? Maybe the lifetime PR or felt like Superman or looked the best or led a friend to their 1st finish?
For us it was probably the Ball State Spring Sprint Triathlon…81 1st time finishers, tears, babies and best friends hand in hand…and it started at 11am for the race team and we LOVED that one!
I dealt with an injury riddled season and had to change my ‘A’ race from a long course tri to an aquabike (1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bile). I finished 3rd overall, my best finish of the year.
70.3 Steelhead for me. Hit by a car in June wiped out June races and still hurting my training in July. Finished 10 amateur and 1st AG with a 4:18:xx but what I was really happy about was my 30 swim in choppy water, pro swam a 26, and a 1:20:59 run. Now just need to get more bike fitness to take my bike to 2:10-2:15!
Challenge Roth. First major race since being diagnosed diabetic so it brought a whole new set of challenges. Plus it’s an amazing event that I would recommend to anyone.
Rev3 Quassy was almost definitely my best race. I went 4:17 later on a faster course, but my 4:32 in Quassy was much harder to produce with the terrain. Came off the bike first with the fastest split, then landed 5th overall, 3rd under 40 after the run. Walked away with a small cash prize too!
Powerman Zofingen … simply because I did finish in 9 hrs 16 mins versus the men’s cut-off of 11 hours (women get 12). As an old guy from the flatlands of Florida, this was a major challenge; and 7 of 30 on Team USA did not finish. It was damn hard.
NYC Marathon - Ran undertrained and injured. Slower than my goal by 30 minutes. Ran it in memory of a best friend who lost a very fast battle with pancreatic cancer 2 months before the race. Hardest, most emotional, most satisfying race of my life.
70.3 WC for me. The season was marred by a 6 month bout of ITBS, and on minimal training I went 5 min faster than when I did the 70.3 Tremblant two years ago - and the course was more challenging due to no flat out and back portion.
One of the local races - a good battle with a guy I’d been battling all season:
He out swam me by 11 seconds - he’s 7th and I’m 8th.
I out T1-ed him by 35 seconds.
He passed me on the bike and I dug in to stay with him and re-passed him just before transition. He out biked me by 14 seconds to have the fastest bike split and we hit T2 in 1st and 2nd.
I out T2-ed him by 7 seconds.
He catches and passes me at the run turn around. I shadow him.
With about 1.5km to go I attack on an up hill and get a small gap and stretch it. I win by 11 seconds.
His run split is 6 seconds faster.
He has the faster swim, bike and run splits but my fast transitions make the difference.
“Finest” race because I didn’t panic when he caught me and coz of tactic of attacking on a hill (my strength - part mountain goat!)
This is extremely cheesy, but my best race was a local (and small) duathlon. 5k, 21 mile bike, 5k.
Ran the first 5k in third place, blew by the others on the bike and led the entire bike course with a motorcycle following me the entire way. Then proceeded to run the second 5k in about the same time as the first. Ended up winning the whole race by almost 4 minutes.
In my entire 45 years of existence, I have NEVER won a race. Although it was a small field, it was a cool feeling to win. Just wish they had a tape I could have broken at the finish line
I was generally happy with the bulk of my races (did 5) this year, but I’m most proud of my last race. I’m lucky enough to live in an area where the fourth best ITU development team in the US shows up to a lot, if not all of my races. At my last race; it was the USaT mid-Atlantic collegiate champs race, and the ITU dev. Team showed up. I got 2nd AG (beating all but one ITU kid) and would have been 18th out of 100+ in the collegiate race (I’m a HS senior). Swam alright, biked 23mph (first year of cycling, to boot) on a very hilly course, then ran 18:50 on an equally hilly run course.
