Did any of you carefully watch the show on Versus over the last few days? What a difference in the production of IM Hawaii…
I was not sure if I heard a certain piece of info correctly. This was at the end of the show when they re-capped on the special interest stories. I hit rewind on my DVR (tevo) learning that I heard correctly:
The 77 year old triathlete has survived 4 plane crashes in his life! That is unbelievable! I have yet to be in one plane crash. That is deserving story for an IM show. If I ever see this guy standing in the same line with me boarding a plane, I think I will wait for the next flight!
I heard it too…how funny. Your post made me laugh out loud! It was Frank Farar who is the former governor of South Dakota and he also was told to never run after taking up traithlons in his 60’s. I’m not “buying” the 4 plane crash thing…not sure I’d want to DRAFT off him in my next Ironman though…
He’s a private pilot and perhaps the funniest guy you could talk to at an Ironman event. He flies to events in Minnesota often, rides his bike to the race site and rides back to the airplane after the race.
Hate to be sappy, but he’s a bit of a hero after getting to know him better. A few of my favorite lines of his:
Moo - “I slipped on the timing map and everybody thought I was dead. I was waiting for someone to pick me up”
Moo - “I like looking at everyone’s butt passing me”
FL - (regard entry to 1/2 Fl) “The race was full, but I told them I’d dress up as Mickey Mouse. Graham said it would have to be Goofy instead”
Turtleman - (regarding driving him back to the plane) You’ll be at home in bed before I finish.
Yes…he’s crashed his plane. You’d be surprise how many amatuer pilots have crashed…

No no…a friend of mine (Plastic Surgeon) has crashed three now…the latest is when he forgot to lower the landing gear…
