Best "Idiots Guide" to photography book

I am looking for a comprehensive but relatively easy to understand guide to photography, specifically taking photographs with a digital SLR.

Does anyone have any recomendations?

Much appreciated.

Andrew

why limit yourself to DSLR books? any ‘good’ photography book will teach you how to take pictures, then other books can teach you how to use photoshop etc. to improve them.

If it was me and I was limited to only one book in each category I’d pick

for the photography side of things there are a billion books, two I’ve always really really liked are

  • The complete guide to night & low light photography - Frost
  • Understanding exposure - forget the author

for the computer side of things it’s easier, this book is just the best

  • Photoshop: restoration & retouching - Karin Eismann

There are a ton of books available. If you’re beyond the basics then I’ll recommend “The Digital Photography Book” volume 1 & 2 by Scott Kelby. Two books that cover everything.

Also pick up a guide book for your particular camera.

Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure is a great all-around beginner book. After reading it you’ll understand how shutter speed, aperture and ISO interact and intersect.

It’s inexpensive and can often be found in stock at local Borders or B&N. Amazon has it, of course.

The second edition is updated to include info on digital photography.

Nick Kelsh “How to Photograph Your Life”

I really like this book. He spends two pages on common photos: a group around a table, the beach, first bicycle ride, etc. He uses two photos to demonstrate what people normally shoot and then what looks good. A paragraph or two of explanation. It’s not technical, just practical.
