Best guide book for new athletes?

I have a friend who wants to take up triathlon in 2015 after several years of running. She’s a young person (early 20s) who is eager but admittedly clueless about bike and swim training. (I guess the fact that she knows she doesn’t know anything puts her ahead of many, but I digress…)

What say the giant, throbbing brain that is the ST readership about a good guide book to help her through those first painful steps? I would like to err on the side of simplicity rather than asking her to sip from a gushing fire hose of everything about FTP, chronic training load, yadda yadda yadda.

Suggestions gratefully received. Thanks for looking.

I started with the Triathletes Training Bible but truthfully that was a little overkill for a newbie. I also have the Time Crunched Triathlete and I like its message on training and competing within the confines of your lifestyle. Not everyone can or should do longcourse and I believe this book gives a sensible approach to training for a person with a busy lifestyle.

Good luck to your friend! The triathlon journey is a blast.

Great read from a lady with tons of experience

Doesn’t look like you’ve gotten much help here. There are lots of books ranging from those that will give you little help to Friel’s that is more than you want or need for starters. I just finished–and am beginning to retread–Matt Dixon’s “the Well Built Triathlete.” I think it’s got a lot to offer both beginners and more advanced athletes.

It has been quieter than I thought thanks for the rec, I’ll take a look.

Joe Friel has a great, short book for newbies - Your First Triathlon: Race Ready in 5 Hours a Week.

Doesn’t go too deep into the sport, but is a great starting point.

Triathlon is expensive…
