I’ve been adding Bear Naked Original Cinnamon to my oatmeal or yogurt for years. Does anyone recommend another brand that’s reasonably low carb and fat with high protein?
that book by Shalane Flanigan has a recipe that is incredible. It is ez and way better than anything you can buy.
Hello DBF and All,
For storebought granola if you live in San Diego area … Jimbos … http://jimbos.com/
Get the ‘Jimbo’s Own’ in the bulk department … not sure but I think it is bin #502
Made fresh regularly … and it is the best!
For cooked oatmeal type bkfst … http://forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/?post=6009196#p6009196
Use about 2 or 3 heaping teaspoons of each grain.
Has about 40 grams of protein and it quick … 10 minutes in the microwave at power level 7 so it won’t boil over.
Not sure about the nutritional content but the Travel Channel Guy, Andrew Zimmern says
“this granola is the best in North America”

If you are into making your own granola, which I am! I love the recipe in the book Racing Weight Cookbook by Matt Fitzgerald. The recipes are based on healthy carbs and higher protein and try to keep low fat. It is as simple as it gets. Best I have ever had. 5 ingredients,Oats, Peanut Butter, Honey, Salt, and Vanilla extract. Thats it. Bake a big cookie sheet of it and it lasts for a week or so depending on how much you eat. I usually double the recipe because I eat it all the time.

I love this granola recipe too. It never turns out crunchy for me, though - it’s more like a delicious peanut butter oatmeal cookie. Still great in everything.
Matt F’s recipe sounds good to me. I’ll order his book.

I realize it is a borderline request… Would you have a suggestion on the ratio of ingredients
FWIW …I plan to purchase the Fitzgerald tri book with training plans…
The best granola by far IMO is the First Street French Vanilla Granola from Smart and Final. It comes in a nice big bag and fairly inexpensive. First Street is Smart and Finals store brand.

Honey and Oats:

Theres also some sort of cinnamon &/or raisin that I cant find a link to.
Unfortunately Smart and Final is a chain based in California with stores in a few surrounding states and I’m in NY. I haven’t found anything remotely similar around here. I just have a friend pick up a few bags when hes coming to NY.
The simple version
3/4 cup peanut butter
3/4 cup honey
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
Stir together. Microwave 20 seconds. Stir again. Add
4 cups old fashion oats
Stir together & drop on lined cookie sheet and spread it out a bit. Bake 300 for 10 minutes. Turn oven off & let cool completely in oven with door cracked.

Thanks!
Niche answer I know: Mirracole Morsels from a tiny bakery in Kingston, WA. Whole Foods carry them throughout the PNW.
Edit: mirracole
Thanks everyone, keep them coming.
I’d prefer pre-packaged, though I’m going to try Matt F’s recipe. In desperation I ordered Bob’s Red Mill Classic Whole Grain Granola.
I also add flax seed to my oatmeal. I recently purchased Trader Joe’s Golden Roasted Flax Seed, Whole Seeds. It smells great and adds a great taste.
I recommend the lavender room for posts that have nothing to do with triathlon.
I always considered Bear Naked as triathlete food. That’s how it was recommended to me.
America’s test kitchen has a recipe I used. It was so damn good I couldn’t make it again because we sat and ate it within a day! Search for that one, as it wasn’t too hard to make and was simply incredible.

Seque, this reminds of the WORST granola I have ever had and that is Quaker Simply Granola. Sold at Costco among many other places. Gave me the worst GI distress I have ever had. Probably because of the crazy amount of Inulin in the product. Avoid at all costs, no matter how much you might have a craving if you see it some where and you really want some granola.

I have the book and I made it tonight. Really tasty.

Funny, I love this granola. I eat it plain in almond milk for breakfast a lot. There is an apple cinnamon version thats really good too.
I’m currently working trhough a box of Trader joes almond clusters granola. High in carbs but it tastes so good!

My body doesn’t do well with Inulin, then again, I don’t normally just have A bowl of Granola. I do think it is a little ironic to use the word ‘Simply’. The Inulin thing is a common practice these days to jack up the fiber content of various bars/foods. I will admit the cereal can be rather tasty, but for me it wasn’t worth the discomfort later on. Needless to say I finished about 3/4 of two bag pack and was done.
Not to picky on the taste department as I don’t think I have ever had a bad tasting granola. Love to add some to some to Greek yogurt with some berries and a cut up banana. Great little snack. Actual, a great way to for the OP to get the protein content required.
