The family is trying to plan a vacation somewhere for july/august and I want to make sure that we go somewhere where I can have some really great rides. Can’t take a break from your goals just cause the family needs a vacation. Anyways, if you know of a real cool adventerous place or even a sweet cabin area on a lake just shout it out. Thanks
In 2002, I rented a cabin for about a week in the Smokies (near Bryson City, NC). I mostly rode (e.g. Blue Ridge Parkway, but also did some hiking and running. Lots of other activities possible, too.
I live 1 mile off the Blue Ridege Parkway in Asheville, NC. You cant go wrong here as the riding is scenic and challenging, plenty for the family to do too.
The Natchez Trace Parkway is a great cycling paradise. Lots of Civil War History too, if you are interested in that sort of thing.
For a family vacation, the terrain is much more friendly to those who are not hard core cycling fanatics than the terrain near the Smokies and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
well i used to live in the san juans and they are off scale scenic, however the island population at large is VERY intolerant to cyclists , i feel it’s one of the scaryest (sp) places to log miles and i ridden all over the country. so many riders visit (many doing themselves no favors)
and the roads often have no shoulder and a drainage ditch, drivers think there just swatting those pesky summer flies. Often there not even friendly when your spending your money at thier businesses.
ride along pacific coast high way 1. Big Sur area is amazing. I did it december and there was no traffic. Don’t know about the road conditions in the summer months. But that’s a ride you got to do some day.
The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive are superb, but hilly. Start anywhere from Front Royal, Virginia and head South. Don’t go when the vicious “leaf watchers” are out (late September to late October). Spring is my favorite time.
If you die up there at least you were within God’s reach…
