Anyone seen the ad for TIAA-Cref? Brilliant counter-programming. Their ad agency is going to win awards with it.
It plays to the resentment the nerds have for the jocks. You gotta love it.

Yes, but no one can beat Ronald McDonald synchro swimming! That one is pretty funny.
D.
Are you 3 years old?
I’ve really enjoyed the advertising also. Some wonderful commercials.
I loved the bud light commercial where they have the Low Jump.
“Anyone seen the ad for TIAA-Cref?”
i am sure i have seen it, but can’t recall it now. can you refresh my memory?
the trojan horse commercial is more clever than most, but since the horse was a weapon of deception the Greeks used against the Trojans, it is not the best symbol to endear the rest of the world to the Greeks right now. not that mainstream america could actually recognize this fact though.
I haven’t seen this one, but I am reminded of that old SNL skit with John Belushi for “'Lil Chocolate Doughbuts.”
“I logged a lot of miles preparing to win the gold medal in the decathlon. And I downed a lot of ‘lil chocolate doughnuts.’”
I like the one with the little girl trying to start the car with magic and her dad with the remote start. I don’t have kids, but I imagine that is pretty accurate.
chewing gum doing a triathlon - great commercial
.
That’s my favorite as well. The girl’s reaction is great. I’ve got a 4-year-old and an almost 2-year-old, and that joy at something “magic” is great to see. The commercial captures it well.
I like the Home Depot commercials.
Our new van has the radio controls on the back of the steering wheel so the driver can change the volume and station without taking your hands of the wheel. I got in the car for the first time with the kids and after about 5 minutes the kids started screaming out “turn it up” then they’d scream out different radio station call letters if they did not like the song that was playing. If I did not respond instantly they’d scream louder and louder until I changed the station. I finally got pissed and stopped responding to the little devils then one of them asked why the voice control was not working any more. My wife had convinced them that they could control the radio with their voices all the while she was, unseen to them, using the steering wheel buttons to changes stations and volume. I guess the joke was on me.
My favorite commercial is the Torre/Steinbrener Visa commercial where Torre says “we really need that right arm”
As an employee of the firm running the Trojan horse ad, I was happy to see they didn’t run Carrot Top! I like it, but suspected that only computer geeks would get it. The Greek irony never occurred to me. I also like the Allstate ad with the weightlifter.

It’s the one that starts out with some sad, syrupy song about how “There’s a place for us, too” and then has some shots of a college professor lecturing to a nearly empty room, some researcher in a warehouse studying a specimen jar, etc while the music plays. It ends with something like “TIAA-Cref: Helping those who work to make the world a better place.” Every word dripping with bitterness and jealousy. It’s pretty funny- whoever scheduled it for the Olympics is thinking outside the box.
The first 2-3 times I saw that commercial I thought it was pretty cute. But now it is simply ex-cru-ciating! my least favorite of the national commercials (don’t get me started on the regional/local ones!). maybe if you can still enjoy that commercial after seeing it over a dozen times, you are more than ready/suited to raise children. quite possibly a sign that i totally shouldn’t have kids in the foreseeable future.
Yup, that’s my favorite too. Guy’s name is Shane Hammon, and what he does with a barbell and colored plates is amazing.
I’m loving seeing the Sealy Posturpedic ads. I’ve seen three different ones so far, don’t know if there’s more. Reminds me of trying to get my boys to bed when they were younger. I can’t help but wonder how many takes it took before the high jumper landed perfectly. Can only imagine how many times he cracked his head or other body part on something.
