Best bike lock for those quick errands?

I’m NOT looking to get my bike stolen by leaving it outside for hours on end but if I wanted to leave it for 10 minutes while I pick up some groceries…

Anybody have something stolen with a “good” lock?

Anybody ever stop a their or realize somebody tried to steal their bike?

Let’s have some input here. What’s the best bike lock for my “savings on wheels”

. . . I’m currently using a thin Kryptonite cable with a standard, combination padlock. I use the cable as I can thread it through both wheels, the frame and a wider variety of objects to lock the bike to. I use the padlock because it can be closed around the cable ends and the seatstay, preventing anyone from getting enough leverage to pop it. Finally, when I coil the cable up, and lock it together, it makes a much smaller package in my bag than a u-lock. Cheaper too.

I never had a bike stolen while locked, or even a wheel.

I have however, had pretty much every accessory on the bike stolen when I’ve left it on there. Lights, pumps, saddle-bags etc.

bump…little help here? Thousands of bike freaks and nobody lock them up?

from what i hear those cables are only slightly more effective than string. ditto with those u-locks, but if you arae only locking the bike for 10mins in well-travelled/lit places then probably a sufficient deterrent?

For my commute bike ($500 fixie I want to keep) I use a big ass chain and padlock i got from the hardware store.

I use an Avenir cable lock. I use a seat post bracket to hold it on my commuting/errands bike but I also occasionally use it with my tri-bike (I stuff it in a large seat pack along with my running shoes) when I want to ride to a cool place to run.

In the past I used the Kryptonite motorcycle lock and chain that my brother used on his Harley, but when someone pointed out that the lock and chain were more expensive than my psycho-billy cadillac commuter I stopped using it. I use a regular cable and combo lock I bought at my LBS now. It does the job, but I don’t think anyone would want to steal my commuter. It wouldn’t exactly get much play on any of the bike porn threads.
