Best Bang for the Buck: Powertap or Computrainer?

I am looking for a new toy to help get over the post IM blues and am considering either a Computrainer or Powertap to try to take my cycling to the next level. I have been using Spinnervals DVD’s with a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine the last three years with good results. I can think of several advantages to each. Which of these training tools would you rather have and why?

Depends on your climate. I’m a softy and hate riding in anything except perfect weather, thus, I would opt for a computrainer/tacx. But, if you have year-long, nice riding, go with the powertap. I like the computrainer b/c it allows me to do hard intervals that I would not be able to accomplish on the road (it’s just easier for me to spin hard on a stationary bike compared to being on the road).

Powertap definitely. You can use it on the trainer with your spinervals and outside. I wouldn’t want to be tied to my trainer for power, especially since it’s less accurate.

I think the Computrainer is a more powerful training tool, but much of my riding ends up being indoors and I still ride outdoors in the snow, ice, and cold. Living in a city, there is no place for me to do 2x20 intervals outside, so I’m still in the basement a couple of times a week during the summer. Then again, I also own 4 PTs (Saris is a sponsor). I primarily use the PT for watching power during endurance/tempo rides outdoors (so I don’t go overboard and get an accurate TSS). I also think the PT is invaluable for racing. Many of my teammates use their PT on the trainer with a lot of success. Personally, I prefer using Ergvideo on the Computrainer for intervals. I just spin and deliver the needed power without having to think.

If possible, look for both used and it will end up being the same for what your paid new for one. Good luck!

says who?

PT. It can go on the road with you. Use the PT w/spinervals if you like them. Also, look into the saris powerbeam if you decide you need a CT.

If you are looking to learn from others mistakes and get the best bag for you buck? Then please buy the power tap! In my personal opinion save a few extra bucks and by the Quark. The wait will be well worth it and you will save money in the long haul.

Think about it.

  1. Use power to train and race with any wheel of your choice = Quark or SRM.
  2. Use power to train and race (with wheel cover, or 2nd set up) but still have wheel restrictions = Power Tap.
  3. Train in doors only = Comutrainer.

Wish I would have learned the easy way. I still use my Ergomo head unit as a paper weight.

I have a Quarq and a Computrainer. If I had to pick one I’d go with the Computrainer. I like having realistic rides during the winter and I even use it in the summer for 60 minute or less speed workouts when I don’t want to deal with traffic.

powertap…

I have a powertap and like it but getting a Cinqo. I really think the Cinqo makes more sense. I hate having the powertap in only one wheel.

I have both…the PT has more value year round.

When you need it most in a race the PT if used properly can protect yourself from blowing out your legs.
The Computrainer is awesome for forcing yourself through tough winter workouts.

Just buy both, you’ve earned it

If you go with the Computrainer, the PT will be another purchase down the road… Once you started training with power (and taking the time to understand it) you will feel naked on the road without a power meter.

I got the CT first, and then spent two seasons with no power on the road. Getting a PT this spring got my “game” to another level.
