Best available tubular

I have been using 2006 continental comp vectran tubulars. Is this the best available tubular considering factors of rolling resistance, puncture resistance and handling? Are there any recent test reports comparing various tubulars. Thanks for any input.

Dugast … good luck finding them.

For the sae of ease, latex tube=faster, butyl=more flat proof.

Conti Comps with vectran are usually said t be the most flat resistant tubulars.

Veloflex is said to be the fastest but not great with puncture resistance.

I don’t think there is any published work comparing 2006 continental comp vectran to anything. Continental claims that the vectran tires are faster than previous competitions (butyl). How that compares to latex tubies, I don’t know. I would like to see some new comparisons.

I think Dugasts might be best for rolling resistance and/or handling, but are lacking in puncture resistance? Don’t know cause I haven’t ever used them.

In unscientific testing (our race wheel rental fleet) we have found Tufo, in particular the Tufo S3 Lite <215, to be both bomber, durable, and nice to ride. The Vittoria Corsa Evo CX, the tire often lauded as the premier mass-made tubie, has faired the absolute worst.

The Tufo tubular tape makes life for my mechs much easier (and less messy), and seems to hold as well (if not more consistently) as glue.

Tufo’s also regualarly test fairly close to dead last in rolling resistance, often worse than Gatorskins.

I guess I wasn’t considering rolling resistance when setting up my criteria, simply because of the difficulties involved. Unfortunately I’m not very much into testing rolling resistance, but after reading the excellent article posted above http://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-1503651.html
I understand why Tufos have performed so well (in terms of durability and puncture resistance, at the expense of rolling resistance, apparently), thank you for that. I had always been suspicious of estimates of rolling resistance, thinking they were dosed with subjectivity, but this test looks reasonable. Plus, “butyl fused to carcass” sounds like a great name for a punk band.

Oh…and paying for them.

Veloflex record carbon.

Conti Tempo, soo much faster than competition, sooo much weaker, the choice is up tp u! I have ridden Conti Tempo, it survived one ironman and nothing more. The tempo comp. I had afterward it leaked after six minutes. But on the othe side I have never been soo fast that Ironman and those six min…

The records may well be best if you are racing on unusually good roads, but this is a very fragile tire, barely more than a track tire, I would certainly not trust the records for general use.

Conti Tempos are, I believe, supposed to be track tires. They aren’t built for road so it’s no surprise it won’t last very long there.

I second the Conti Comp’s '06. I have ridden them through tons of crap and never had a flat. Make sure you are going with the 22mm and not the 19 though. The 19’s can have negative effects on the aero properties of Zipp wheels.

The contis are pretty much the best puncture resistance tire out there, one rason so many pro tour teams use them
.

On conti site they state following: Track, or Road(but only for races, for sufficient use). I’ll not race on those for road anymore but they are fast and made my day on my A-race, which was enough for me. I have talked to ppl how have usex Vittoria EVO CS(not CX) and Tempo, they think CS is even worse when it comes to durability.

Wow, cool site thanks! All I have to do now is just ask for 2 simple bike tires for my Christmas secret santa exchange! When they ask what kind I’ll let them know. I’m sure they won’t mind the $300-400 per pair price

These are good guys. Sometimes I feel like calling them just to hear their NewYawk accents. They tend to get a bunch of Dugasts at once and then sell out pretty quick – then you have to wait for a few months. So give them your email and reserve yours in advance.
