So thinkin about gettin a rear hydration system and all i hear/read about is people complaining about flyin bottles… so looking for some cages that arent gonna make me buy new bottles all the time . any suggestions?
I have had an X-Lab flat wing and Profile Kages for years…no problem ejecting…or I should say, no ejecting problem.
I bought a profile design unit off of ebay for $15, invested $1 in 50 rubber bands, and combined the two to make a launch proof system. Sure, it’s not ideal, but it gets the job done.
The carbon cages on ebay that are full circles are good, you have to pull the bottle straight up and it cant really fall out…
Three rubber bands linked together… two on each arm of the water bottle cage, linked into the one that goes over the nozzle of the water bottle. That got me lots of comments (“wow… that’s a really good idea… wish I woulda’ done that.”) out on the bike course at IMWI last year.
I have the X-lab Super Wing on my bike (… really impressed with that)… but I didn’t buy their cages (http://www.trisports.com/gorilla-carbon-cage.html). At $50 a pop, I would imagine that they HAVE to hold a bottle pretty well. Otherwise, there’s always the alternative… $0.15 in rubber bands. Your call.
Specialized RibCage on ebay…$15.
x2 on this free fix. And it can be really fun when you steal someone’s rubber bands from their clipped in shoes in Transition and replace them with your extra zip ties… Its all about the drama folks…
I use the Bontrager tri cages and haven’t lost a bottle yet.
x2 on the specialized rib cages. I’ve been using mine with polar water bottles for over a year and haven’t had a single incident. I’ve ridden over some pretty rough terrain and they combo works fantastic.
Cheap metal ones - seriously. Bend them tight. Repeat as needed. Replace if it yields.
Arundel Mandible. They are THE best. I did some field “testing” of their grip. I couldn’t even get potholes I thought might destroy my wheels to budge a bottle. They will NOT eject a bottle. They are so much better than anything else out there it is astounding…
Agree with Rapp the mandible is awesome however it doesn’t work with the camelback podium chilljacket bottles they don’t really have a notch in the upper third of the bottle and tend to creep up, regular bottles though, I can almost pick my bike up with them.
yea i saw ur post rapp about those cages i was about to order them and then i read someone elses post about that confirmed what the guy below said about the podium bottles…and seeing as those are mainly what i use since its hot as hell out here in az im think ima try the specialized ones… thanks for the advice and input everyone

The two best ones I have used are the cheap plastic ones from Profile Design, which I even use successfully on my mountain bike with a seatpost mounted cage through the African bush (never EVER lost a bottle) and the other I recently installed was the Specialized Rib Cage which I installed on the Ceepo under saddle with some cable ties and it has yet to even get a bottle to move.
Have yet to try the Arundel, but we don’t have an agency in South Africa. Might pick some up in Kona.

Powered by Fairbairn Private Bank, Puma, Ceepo, Morewood, Suunto, Rockets Compression, Whasp & Jack Black Beer.
Elite, have yet to launch a bottle in four years of using them.
I use an elastic shoe lace.
While they cost a little bit more than rubber bands they don’t degrade in the sunlight.

Specialized RibCage on ebay…$15.
x3
I’ve been using these for over 10 years and never lost a bottle and we have some rough roads in PA.
x2 on the Mandible’s. I have them on my race bike and my road bike and they’re bulletproof.
If, however, on a budget, I would go with the Rib Cage MTB.
