Bell Meteor II size/fit question

So I am sitting here getting ready to order a LG Rocket, when I see that the Meteor II finall comes in a M/L. My head is like 58cm around, and I like to leave some room. I apparently have what the shops call a “Bell” head, vs a “Giro” head, meaning the Giros don’t fit well and the Bell does.

I am pretty much ready to order the Meteor now, but obviously can’t try it on. Can anyone tell me if it fits the same as other Bell helmets? I wear the Sweep R in a regular helmet. Also, does anyone know the cm size of the M/L? I can’t find it. I would assume up to 61-63cm or so.

Thanks for any assistance.

the giro advantage and bell meteor II are the exact same helmet, they have the same structure but different ferring to look different(they are made by the same company) so if you dont fit one…you wont fit the other… i had both and they run very tight…i usualy wear medium and it s a tight medium with these TT helmet

Really? Same helmet? The Giro guy that was in the shop a few weeks ao denies that(although I know how that goes). I knew they were the same company, but he said they still operated different factories and were pretty much still separate.

I do know that the Bell Sweep R and Giro Pneumo fit completely different though, so I figured that the aero lids should/would be the same way.

well…maybe he is right? but when i put both helmet next to each other and look inside, it was indentical and i could not notice a difference. to put them on…fell exactly the same… but they look different from the outside yep…so they are no the same helmet…they have a different ferring

Well, you have seen both, that’s good enough for me. Like I said, the Giro rep says they’re different, but that’s probably what he has to say.

Not true, the Bell and Giro are not the same helmet, the shells are different the molds are different and they both fit differently. The GIro is not as comfortable as the Bell. I own both of them and Bjorn has worn both of mine, the Bell is a more comofortable fit, although it is not CPCS legal.

well, my bad…i really didnt notice a difference. i got the giro from a shop in france and the bell from a rep before it came available to the shops. Maybe it was a different bell meteor? as for comfort, it s personal…i like the giro more than the bell.

of course fit is personal, that is true! If you ever get a chance to look at the two helmets up close again, the Bell is a little wider on the inside and the shell is more roomy, it also has more vents, front and back. The tail is also longer and “swoops” down to a sharper point.

So Jason, do you know if the Bell fits like a typical Bell helmet, ala the Sweep?

Personally, I dont like the fit of the Advantage or the Meteor, with the Meteor being better. I also do not like the fit of the Atmos and Sweep R. but the Sweep R is a little better then the atmos, so I would say yes on that. On the flip side, I find the Spiuk Krono to be more comfortable than either the bell and giro.

A bike shop friend of mine said that Bell/Giro has two base molds for the foam liner – the Bell liner is more rounded, whereas the Giro one is more oblong. Apparently, this allows them to cover 99% of the population; if one brand doesn’t work, the other will, so the one parent company can make you happy.

Yep, that’s how I was told. That’s what I mean by having a Bell head vs a Giro head.

Thanks guys.

Hi Jason,

Does the Spiuk Krono have a closer fitting to the back than the Bell? I have the Bell and think that if I was a leading TDF Pro I would probably get one of the ones with the built up back as I find it difficult to keep the tail of the helmet down ( http://www.7oaksphotography.com/Sports/7oaks%20triathlon%2010%20Sep%2006/No%20numbers/pages/IMG_0497.htm ). I have tried LG rocket and sits nicely close/touching to my back though as our club kit supplier is SPIUK if it fits well it would go nicely with my TT skinsuit and tri suit

Note sure if this will help but several of the UK shops that sell the helmet online list the following specifications:

Small - 51-55cm head circumference
Med - 55-59cm head circumference

I wear a size s/m Lazer Genesis which is similar in fit to a s/m Giro Pneumo but what I found, at least with the 2006 Bell Meteor II model is that the adjustments to the headband are made via velcro fasteners. So based on that, I ordered a size small Bell Meteor II at the beginning of the year but after two outings, found that it was too small and was squeezing the heck out of teh sides of my face and nearly cutting off the lower 1/3 of my earlobes. I once again measured my head and determined I am marginally a tad over 55cm so I ordered a size medium Meteor II and although I only got to use it a couple more times this year (a total of about 160km), I feel the size medium fits much better than the size small Meteor II. I am inclined to think that you may be okay with the size medium from a headband perspective, but might want to be concerned about how well the helmet covers the sides of your face, specifically your earlobes.

The GIro is not as comfortable as the Bell.
I hate both of you helmets Jason:)!

Thats because your head is the size of a watermelon!!!

Had dinner with Deano last night- your secret weapon will be ready in 3 weeks!!!

Thanks for the info guys. Due to me havign a rather large head and knowing that it swells during races, I think I am going to move towards the LAS Chrono, which people have said fit larger heads.

You cant get the ones that are “built up” as they are done for each athlete custom by the helmet companies (bell and giro) that being said, the reason why the tail of your helmet is so high in relation to your back is because your head is fairly high and you are sitting fairly upright. two things you can try- (1) tilt the helmet back a little bit on your head, that will lower the tail and (2) try to lower your head too. Look at this photo of Gusev from Discovery.even though his helmet is “built up” look a how little “build out” he needs to get the helmet flush. Look at his head position in reference to yours. Try to stretch out a little and get that head down! Stretching your arms out a little will virtually lower you slightly too.

The downside to that LAS however, is that because of its size, it presents a fairly large frontal profile compared to many aeo helmets out there, one that can in fact slow you down a little bit.

You should see the frontal of my head.
