So I finally remembered to dig up my old mountain biking helmet from my parent’s house and woooooeeee I missed it. Its so incredibly comfortable with those almost 1cm thick pads! I also packed my extra pads with the helmet (2 extra sets, one medium thickness, one thin set) and put the mediums on this morning with my skull cap to ride in -2C morning sunshine. It was perfect. (Its a specialized with mountain dew stickers on it - mountain man or something?)
I’ve only been using Bell and Giro helmets since I switched to tri, but why is it that their pads are so incredibly thin? I saw mulitple posts here about people who hate them since they disintegrate so quickly. I’ve gone through two sets of pads alone on my atmos in less than two years. Is it for that low profile? My gf was joking that I looked like a little kid in the helmet, I guess because it sticks up and out so much. I don’t care! Are the bigger pads more prone to changing the fit of the helmet? (ie. moving around?)
I think I’m going to spend some time this winter possibly looking for a better helmet. Does Specialized still make helmets with thick padding? How are those new Giant helmets in the Giant 2007 catalogue? Catlike? (Where do I even find Catlike?)
