That sucks. He was the guy I was really watching last year. After doing the long walk in 2007 and his comments about planning to dig really deep in 2008 prior to the race, I was really rooting for him. And, he didn’t disappoint!

CMV is is a herpes viral genus of the Herpesviruses group. Are you sure you are talking about the same thing? Not sure what the relationship would be with getting hurt and having surgery.
To be clear, he first got the cmv (cytomegalovirus), then recovered from it. Did a good build up and hoped to still be fine for Kona. This week he did a local race (with also Luc Van Lierde, among others) and got injured, probably causing him to cancel Kona.
More details on the accident: while exiting T1 he was not yet in his shoes and started to pedal to first come at speed. After a few meters his bare foot slipped from his shoe/pedal right into the spokes of his front wheel. He lost a fair amount of skin and got surgery for that.
