Beginner Question: New bike, gears not shifting

It is probably something very simple, but I can no longer shift on my new bike. The tension feels right on the cables and I even adjusted the rear derailer as instructed by the bike shop. However, when i try to shift, nothing happens. The rear gear is on the smallest sprocket which is making my current fixed gear tough to ride. I am probably going to take it in to the bike shop monday, but is there anything else I can try? Please keep in mind that I am brand new to cycling. TIA.

What type of shifters?

Just “feeling” the tension on the cable is not sufficient. What did the bike shop tell you to do?

How are you trying to shift? Assuming that you have Shimano, there are either two levers (the brake lever being one and the smaller lever being the other) for Tiagra and above or the brake lever and a button for Sora. You push the brake lever to the side to shift to larger cogs in the rear and the button or smaller lever to shift to smaller cogs. In the front, the small lever or button will go to smaller chainrings and the brake lever will move to a larger one.

What type of shifters?
Shimano 105

I have a lever under the left brake (for the front derailer) and a lever under the right brake (for the rear derailer). What am I missing?

Do you know that the brake lever itself is also a shifter?

On the right side the larger lever shifts to larger cogs and the small lever shifts to smaller cogs.

On the left side the large lever shifts to the larger ring and the smaller lever shifts to the smaller ring.
