Bee sting & Prednisone stim pack - Racing ok?

I am taking a 6 day Prednisone (4mg) stim pack due to excessive swelling (of my hand) from a bee sting. The Doctor (from a clinic) also prescribed an antibiotic -Cephalexin (500mg x 3). I am on day 2 and the swelling is almost all gone. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t exert myself and do an open 4 mile running race Friday evening? It would be my 4th day on the Prednisone. I wasn’t planning on racing or I would have asked the Doctor when I got the prescription. Thoughts?

Thanks!

I was on a Prednisone treatment for a nasty case of poison Oak a few years back and the docs advised me to go easy on training.

I forget what my dosage was, but I think I was on for 2 weeks, cutting down the dose every 3 days or so.

I’d get medical advice before I went out and hammered for 30 minutes…

.

I got stung by a bee on the lip while biking 2 days before an Olympic Distance Triathlon. The amount of swelling was amazing (and scary). FWIW, I still raced but felt like complete ass. your results may vary.

technically, you should get a TUE (therapeutic use exemption) - you might actually race better on the steroid

This.

  1. See your physician and ask him/her about the risks while training or racing.

  2. Go look the drug up at USAda.org http://www.globaldro.com/us-en/search/IngredientStatus.aspx?ingid=139&countryid=3&sportid=102&exact=1&searchid=474827&userid=1&show=All&search=Prednisone&newSearch=false your search result may vary.

I believe you are on a blister pack of methylprenisolone (and not prednisone) and are tapering the dosage (e.g., start with 6 pills on day 1 - 24 mg, then 5 on day 2 - 20 mg). The steroid increases blood sugar levels, which is nice when you first get on it (day 1 and 2 is awesome), but the taper can leave you strung out as the blood concentration of the steroid drops. Since it’s catabolic, recovery is depressed. It is also potassium wasting, so be sure to replenish lost salts. Corticosteroids are not legal DURING sanctioned competition due to their stimulant effects.

Four miles is no big deal, but since you will be late in your taper (and you take the pills in the morning/race is in evening), your race will suck.
