I am taking a 6 day Prednisone (4mg) stim pack due to excessive swelling (of my hand) from a bee sting. The Doctor (from a clinic) also prescribed an antibiotic -Cephalexin (500mg x 3). I am on day 2 and the swelling is almost all gone. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t exert myself and do an open 4 mile running race Friday evening? It would be my 4th day on the Prednisone. I wasn’t planning on racing or I would have asked the Doctor when I got the prescription. Thoughts?
I got stung by a bee on the lip while biking 2 days before an Olympic Distance Triathlon. The amount of swelling was amazing (and scary). FWIW, I still raced but felt like complete ass. your results may vary.
I believe you are on a blister pack of methylprenisolone (and not prednisone) and are tapering the dosage (e.g., start with 6 pills on day 1 - 24 mg, then 5 on day 2 - 20 mg). The steroid increases blood sugar levels, which is nice when you first get on it (day 1 and 2 is awesome), but the taper can leave you strung out as the blood concentration of the steroid drops. Since it’s catabolic, recovery is depressed. It is also potassium wasting, so be sure to replenish lost salts. Corticosteroids are not legal DURING sanctioned competition due to their stimulant effects.
Four miles is no big deal, but since you will be late in your taper (and you take the pills in the morning/race is in evening), your race will suck.
