Beards

I’ve never let my beard grow for more than a few days before shaving, but I’m doing this No Shave November thing for a fund raiser at work. At 2 weeks the itchiness started bugging me. My wife doesn’t like the way it feels either. Does this get any better with time? I’m ready to get rid of it.

I can’t grow a proper beard to save my ass, but I have tried a couple of times and for me the itching stopped eventually.

I’m in the same boat. Some days it bugs me, others it doesn’t. Remember, you’re doing it for your balls. So when it bugs you, fiddle with your balls. It will get your mind off your itchy face.

Sure, shave it off, let everyone down. I guess we menfolk will just go extinct because nobody is brave enough to raise awareness for us. Whatever.

Not gonna shave it till the end of the month. Just saying it’s bugging me and hope it gets better as it grows out.

Since retiring from the Marine Corps and moving to CO I’ve quite shaving every year on Oct 1st and let the wunder-beard grow out to all it’s glory. Does the itchy feeling go away? Not really, you more or less get used to it, as for your wife, ,my wife says once the hair is longer it really softens ups. The lesson here, persevere.

I’ve trimmed mine once since Oct 1, just enough to catch a few wildings that were growing much faster than the rest. I’m not shaving until March 1st, by then our coldest days are well behind us.

The biggest irritation I get is when swimming, my face feels like it’s covered in a seaweed and snot confection. It’s a small price to pay to be able to run/race all winter without having to worry about my face getting cold.

You gotta make sure you’re washing and treating your beard right. You can’t just do the normal stuff you did to wash your face when you were clean shaven.

Just trim it (or is that breaking the rules?) I had a goatee for about 10 years. Whenever it started to itch, I would trim it.

Trimming, sheeet, let it grow.

Conditioner. The itchiness is mostly dryness. Don’t use regular soap, a little bit of conditioner every other shower or so helps a lot.

I’ve had a beard of one kind or another for 25 years never had an issue with itching after using the conditioner.

My beard never itches… I use minimal combo body wash/shampoo and use a #1-#3 clipper on both face and head every couple of weeks depending on time of year.

I grew one last November as well, and the first few weeks were rough. After 3 weeks, the itchiness went away and it actually was nice not to have to shave every day. I ended up keeping it through the winter. Not going that route again this year though.

I’m not sure you know what a hipster is, but regardless, the point is not to recommend those specific products, just to point out that most people have to treat a bearded face differently than a clean shaven face. Just like you would treat a bald head differently than a full head of hair.

This is really timely as I’m going through it too. Sounds like I need to get some conditioner. I’m hoping the longer it gets the less it itches. Also letting my hair grow out for the first time in 7 years (#2 clippers every couple weeks previously). My hair just grows straight out, so it’s going to be a bearded-fro look… the gf loves me right now.

I classify pretty much every male between 19 and 39 who dresses/grooms themselves like a past generation or just stupidly as a hipster. The worst is the greasy comb-over look.

Now, get of my lawn!

It definitely gets better with time. I usually hit that point a few weeks in, you just have to get through it and then it stops. I’m clean-shaven most of the year, but I’m a little over a month into a beard. Two reasons: once again I have to play Santa Clause at the Christmas party my organization throws for local kids (I work with mostly women and the rest of the males are lame) and I want to annoy my wife because she doesn’t like it and we have a religious ceremony December 27th where there will be a lot of pictures taken (I hate pictures).

I’ve been very lucky, which is good because I’m also lazy :-). I grew a beard because I hated shaving. I wash my face the same way I did without a beard. Soap…water…rinse. Don’t think I’ve every had itching.

If I had to spend extra money and time with products for a beard…I wouldn’t have a beard. It’s all about functionality. Trim beard once a week or less, shave every day. Trimmer, last years. Shavers, shaving cream gone after a couple uses. Grow a beard, save time and money!

I think we are going to look back at this Duck Dynasty beard era and laugh.

I’m doing the same thing. Drives me nuts, but, yeah, it goes away and you get used to it. See what slowguy said, you do need to do a little upkeep. This is my third year doing it, so, it is not that bad. I am trimming it a bit. Mine comes in fast, thick, and heavy. I have to keep it looking professional for court.

I do not get a “whispy” beard like Pitt:

I get a thick, Ben Affleck/Hugh Jackman beard:
