My girlfriend has a very sensitive system and any of the hormonal BC’s seem to throw her off to the point she has less motivation and doesn’t feel like herself. Has tried a few different version of the pill, Nuvaring, and now Mirena. It seems like a non-hormonal option would be best, but we’d appreciate some suggestions/testimonials before trying the Copper T IUD, which seems to be one of the only non-hormonals that work well.
Is there any consensus out there in terms of what elite athletes are using so that their endocrine systems aren’t being messed with?
We haven’t been able to find many studies online regarding the physiological effects of hormonal bc’s in regards to recovery and maintaining lean muscle mass from training for elite female athletes. Anybody want to offer up their personal anecdote or possibly have a link to some good studies?
(BTW, searched the women’s forum, but didn’t see that much there and know there must be a lot of guys who have experience with this with their significant others.)
Don’t have an answer for you as my wife is not an elite level athlete…and not on birth control…and not really a triathlete. But anyway, pubmed came up with nada in my wuick searching. Try spending some time using various words to search more thoroughly (e.g. birth control, contraception, athlete, runner, athlete, elite, triathlete, etc).
I did read recently that Greg Bennett was talking about how Laura had on off-race at London b/c of her monthly visitor. But I guess that probably does not have to do w/ bc.
I just want to post this an a consideration. I should be considered permanent (very different than female BC) but after a seriously honest conversation between both of you it might pop out as an answer: vasectomy.
My GF has crazy reactions to hormonal solutions and was using Nuva Ring because of the relatively low dosages. Didn’t solve the problem, so we just said screw it and went with non-latex condoms (she has latex allergies, too). She doesn’t notice the difference and, personally, I don’t care.
