This may belong in the Lavender Room, but I thought it was more relevant here since this is where most of the discussion gets done- and occasionally the fur flies.
It’s an interesting perspective on internet conduct that emphasizes the need for good moderation, which we do enjoy on this forum.
Two interesting take-aways:
A legal precedent has been established for libel, slander and other damages in the courts against people practicing an on-line, anonymous defamation campaign against an individual or organization. This paves the way for damages and criminal proceedings.
Randi Zuckerberg, former marketing director of Facebook and Google chief Eric Schmidt have been joined by other internet advocates/personalities in recommeding the elimination of anonymous usernames from forums.
I could knock one out of the park here but I’ll take the high road and not make a sarcastically rude comment… At least some of us will understand the irony of this post.
yeah and how about the conduct of people who are ordered by a court to return the money they stole and hide in another state ignoring the order?
an interesting take away: you are a psychopath who has no business discussing conduct on the internet.

Not sure I agree with this anonymous stuff. If I were to go to a public city forum and stand up and start saying that all the politicians are morons and that all the people in the audience are idiots, I am basically still anonymous. Sure I am there but nobody knows who I am. I don’t have to divulge my real name or address or anything to anyone in order to participate in a public forum. Nobody is truly anonymous anyway. If Dan wanted to, he could easily find out who I am simply by using my IP address when I post on his site (I assume he logs IP addresses).
For the original question Google + vs Facebook is the reality, Google wants non anonymous people because it fits better into their biz model for Google + They get more ad revenue if they know exactly who you are.
For the follow up, I must be an old timer, time for some popcorn

Exactly. Tom bashing aside, Google and Facebook won’t be happy till we are all wearing freaking GPS trackers and they can save every purchase we make. “Big Government” is nothing compared to what these companies are up to.
It’s my estimation that per Dan’s guidance in that thread, some of you are WAY out of line here. I’d say grow up, but then I remembered that some of you are definitely already grown up and ought to know better. I’m quite certain none of you have the facts in the situation(s) you allude to and are writing based on half-facts, half-truths, rumors, gossip, innuendo, and other base motives to engage in some serious character assasination, including some heavy-handed sideswipes at Dan and other forum moderators. I think Dan set a pretty good tone in that thread, neither providing complete protection from healthy skepticism and hard questions or on the flip side, allowing unsupported second and third hand trial by internet. Frankly, I’m very surprised at a couple of you. And saddened. If that is the way this community is heading, then I’m going to reconsider whether this is a valuable resource and use of my time any longer. I’ve been around here a long time and have made a lot of great friends on and through ST. I expected the community to change over time…but I expected it to mature…not dissemble what has become a mean-spirited grade-school bully session.
