BB30 Gives a "Sawing" Sound

Took the new Slice on its maiden voyage tonight and noticed a problem almost instantly: There is a “saw” type sound coming from the cranks/BB area, which, on the drive-train side, starts around 2 o’clock; 10 o’clock on the opposite. A call to the shop confirmed that does not sound normal, but I can’t get it to them until tomorrow evening. Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

We have built quite a few Slices, and I have one myself with the BB30 and the SRAM Red crank. As with all BB’s you can get some creaking, but sawing? I havent run across it and I would be interested to know what caused the sound when you find out.

Maybe “sawing” isn’t quite the right word. It’s not an outright grinding, and I notice no seizing of the cranks, as with a bad bearing, but it just doesn’t sound smooth.

I’ll post what I found out, once I find something out.

It could be the bearing covers, if one is misaligned it could be catching on the frame as the cranks turn. I would remove the cranks, check the bearings are properly seated against the circlips and reinstall.

I would also check to see that the bearings are in the frame properly and that the covers over the bearing are sitting properly.

I had a very similar thing happen. Short version–don’t ride it. I spent tons of money and nine months trying to fix it, before they finally warrantied the whole crank. In my experience once it had loosened, something on the crank was never right and it ate bolts until the whole thing was replaced. Sorry I can’t be more specific, but I was trying to let the warranty people deal with this one since I didn’t have the appropriate manuals.

The sawing may be a misaligned front derailleur. I experienced this when I recently switched FDs. The sawing sound was the little ring sawing on the screw on the FD that allows you to remove the FD w/o removing the chain.
