The battery in my Polar 720 is dying. I don’t want to send the unit to a service center as I’m using it almost every day. Has anybody changed their own battery in a Polar monitor? Is it just a matter of taking out the little screws on the back and changing the battery like a wrist watch? Any help would be appreciated. (PS This is also kind of a rip-off to sell a battery powered device that can’t be serviced by the owner!)
I got my battery changed at one of those mall kiosks that sells watches. They just opened it and replaced the battery with another one of the same size. So far, no problems with water getting in.
You can change it yourself (at least in the Polar watches I have seen), but you just have to be very careful about making sure the gasket is in place correctly when you re-assemble the watch. It’s no different than any other sport watch…
The Polar Service center that is part of Creative Health Products www.chponline.com can turn your HRM around in acouple of days. The couple of times I’ve sent my S710 to them for a battery cahnge I’ve had it back in less than a week.
You can probably do it yourself, put you are assuming risk, and you won’t get the full system checkout. I trashed an old Accurex NV swapping the battery out, since then off it goes.
Repeat after me… My HRM doesn’t own me… I won’t die if I don’t have it for a couple days…

My battery died on my polar the day before I was scheduled to leave for a 10-day cycling trip. Since I use it for both cycling and HR functions, I really needed it. I found a store that carried the right battery and I changed it myself. The only problem I encountered was with the rubber seal. Be careful when you remove it that you don’t unseat the seal. You can get it back it, but it makes the whole process more difficult if you unseat it. I’ve had mine back in the water several times with no problem. You’ll need one of those jewler size screwdrivers (phillips).
It takes a CR2354 battery, you can get them at radio shack or online at various places. I bought two from Ebay last month. Replacing it is pretty easy.
My polar fitwatch battery died over the weekend. I had sent it in for a battery change just last spring. Based on the above advice, I may try to change it myself, sure would be easier and cheaper.
