good movie

if you watched it, he got really fast by training really hard. what a novel concept.

So is your point you can only train really hard with running shoes? That seems to be your view point?

no plans to run a marathon barefoot yet, but I am a forefoot striker and I ran my first marathon at Big Sure (very hilly) in 3hours flat.
some told me that was kinda fast.

hey pal, just find this new or apparently old logic interesting.
can’t hurt to have an open mind.

I train my ass off no worries about that, I’m not sitting around running 25mpw wondering why I can’t crack 1:45 in a half marathon. But the thing about getting better is you always have to do MORE, you always need to be looking for another way to improve, I do a little bit of barefoot running above and beyond my running program.

To say that it isn’t helping me get faster is as ridiculous as saying it is…bottom line no one really knows and the evidence for and against is questionable at best.

I think it had more to do with their outfits. They were constantly chased by gay bashers, so they had no choice but to get faster.

believe me I never believed any of this stuff at all but hearing about in person just made me think more about it.
not for everyone but interesting nonetheless.

What about surface hardness? Our ancestors didn’t run on pavement.
A common perception is that running on hard surfaces causes injuries, but runners typically adjust leg stiffness so they experience the similar impact forces on soft and hard surfaces. Further, forefoot and some midfoot strikers hit the ground in a way that generates almost no collision forces even on hard surfaces like steel. You can run barefoot and heel strike on a soft beach or lawn, but most natural surfaces are much harder and rougher. With proper forefoot or midfoot strike form, running on hard, rough surfaces can be comfortable and safe.

		What is minimal footwear?
Minimal footwear is any footwear that lacks high cushioned heels, stiff soles and arch support. If you want to try, there are a few things you might look for in minimal footwear for running:The thickness of the cushioning in the rearfoot and forefoot should be about the same, and not too thick. You should be able to easily twist the shoe along the long axis and bend the shoe at the midfoot. There should not be a stiff arch support that prevents the natural movement of the arch of the foot.

		How do I get started?
It is very important that you follow a slow progression when you transition to forefoot striking. Even with such a program, you will likely experience some muscle soreness in your calf, lower leg and feet. If you progress too quickly, you risk causing injury to your muscles or tendons.

pretty much. as barefoot runners start to ramp up their mileage, they get owned pretty fast. hence they dont train hard. yeah theres always going to be the N=1 that says otherwise, but day in and day out i see those vibram barefoot runners, jogging at an overly high cadence not going anywhere.

barefoot running has its place, during the off season if you want to strengthen your lower leg muscles.

how old are you and how much do you weigh?

without knowing much about you, i bet i could get you down to 1:30 in one season.

You would mean UP to 1:30

I didn’t mean I run 1:45s I meant I’m not one of “those guys” that doesn’t put in training (instead relies on gimmicks like Newtons) and doesn’t get results
.

i have never run barefoot and not sure I ever will, just find this topic very interesting.

Why has Nike Free become such a recent phenom?

Why have a lot of top runners started to use them?

The verdict on long distance barefoot running is still out i do agree, but there seems to be some real validity to some barefoot running in some capacity.

I am 5’10" , 145 and I run like the wind.
You would never be able to catch me…never.

well, in running theres not a whole lot of technique or low hanging fruit like there is in cycling (aerodynamics reduction in Crr) or swimming (body position optimizing pull ect). all you can really do is lose weight.

running is where more is more. progressive overload and make modest improvement over a long period of time is the name of the game.

“Why has Nike Free become such a recent phenom?”

people are bored and dont want to train hard

“Why have a lot of top runners started to use them?”

idk, they seem like low quality shoes as with the rest of the nike line compared to top performers such as brooks and asics.

maybe, but dont you want it so no one could catch you :).

Dunno if they are ‘recent’, since it’s been a few years now they’ve been out. Mostly Nike unofficially admitting that overbuilt shoes cause more problems for most people than they solve. I had 2 pair of Frees, liked them, and now have LunarRacers and VFF’s. LOVE them.

Why have a lot of top runners started to use them?

Cuz they, used properly and in moderation, help strengthen the feet, and improve running form and economy.

I agree as well. It’s fun to run barefoot (or in minimalist footwear). And I think it helps.

are you a coach?

Agreed there is no replacement for mileage and body morphology in running, but I think there is a bit to be gained from technique as well
.

like the way you think Murphy’sLaw.

you guys/gals use any online tracking at all?

i just use paper and pen for now.

I run great in minimal shoes. I run barefoot a little bit just to strengthen my feet. While I do defend bare footers I find running is minimal shoes much more enjoyable.

My thoughts exactly, but I run exclusively in Vibrams. Did a double marathon a few weeks ago in them actually.
