As I finish up my MBA this next Spring, I will likely be onto a different career where travel will be 75% of the time. How many of you out there travel at least this much for your jobs, and how do you get in the required swim/bike training during the weekdays when you are out of town?
Contact Zulu. He travels a ton and still is able to maintain a high fitness level and put up some good race times. At IMF he went ~10:25.
Also contact Khai, he logs a lot of miles as well.
I’m in the total opposite situation with a home office, but was talking to my friend about this. He travels to Europe, Asia and all over the USA regularly. He’s on the road more than he’s at home.
It’s really a matter of picking your hotel in a good area for running and having either good gym/pool facilities at the hotel or nearby. The bike is usually the problem. Can’t really bring one with you and often he’s in large foreign urban areas where it may be dangerous to ride without being familiar with local routes. Sometimes he can rent one locally but most of the time he has to concentrate on the other two areas.
I travel a ton for work and wish I could say I’ve figured this out - it’s just plain hard. Honestly, since I fly several times/week, I don’t even attempt to bring a bike and most hotel pools suck for swimming. I typically just focus on running during my trips. If I’m desperate for variety or don’t want to run outside, I can do interval sesssions on a treadmill or make up bike-run brick sessions on whatever gym bike and treadmill I can get on. I’m embarassed to admit though that many trips get so packed with meetings, etc. that my workouts go in the tank. To add insult to injury, you start taking clients out for nice dinners, etc. it throws you more off track. It takes a lot of discipline to keep your fitness and nutrition high when on the road.
The advantage I have is that even though I’m often gone 3-4 days per week. On the days I don’t travel, I work from a home office, so it’s easier to sneak out and get a lunch swim or take off early for an afternoon ride. I also ususally know at the beginning of the week what my schedule will be for the whole week, so I can plan my bikes and swims to occur on my home days. It’s far from ideal, but you make due with what you’ve got.
