*I was thinking about my nutition for upcoming IMKY and was kinda dreading a day full of energy drinks and gels when it dawned on me that a nice way to get sodium and a break from the sweetness would be to down a packet or two of Taco Bell mild sauce. They’re already in easy-to-open packages and they might give the old tastebuds a kick. What do you think? Woud it be just begging for stomach distress? I plan on trying it this Sunday on my long ride/brick. *

Okay, I tried the hot sauce pack about 60 miles into my 80 mile bike ride. I had planned on trying it sooner but it was a cool day and didn’t feel the need for salt like I do on a hot one. Verdict: not particularly brilliant. Though it tasted great at first, I felt the potential of heartburn on its way. I didn’t get any because I tried only one packet. But any more than that and I’m sure I would have been suffering. So…no sauce for me.
I’d try it in training but I bet it would work. Sometimes a salty snack like this can taste amazing. It seems to me this would work best on the bike?
Last year, for IMFL, I crammed my bento box full of Fig Newtons. This year, for IMC, I’m going to take those little peanut butter pretzels! Sodium, sugar, and they taste good!
Yes, I’m thinking the bike portion. It seems like whenever I finish a century ride or race I crave Mexican food big time so this JUST MIGHT WORK! (said with maniacle mad scientist laugh)
Don’t go and drink gallons of the stuff though!

I think I just puked a little…
I don’t know about drinking the sauce.
Get something salty with some actual calories in it. Even if it is Jalapeno flavored Pringles or something. Get your salt, your spicy craving and some calories.
Don’t go and drink gallons of the stuff though!

Nah, I was just thinking a couple or three packs spread throughout the bike portion. Not really looking to it for a lot of nutritional value. I’m thinking more just for a change of pace.
Taco bell mild sauce is delicious. Ages ago, I worked at a taco bell and I used to eat the mild sauce without anything else… I think your idea is brilliant, though I would worry about heart burn since it’s so acidic.
how about taco bell taco’s w/ mild sauce in your bento box?
Interesting idea. I wonder how many calories are in a packet. Lets us know how it goes this sunday. I also like the peanutbutter pretzel idea another poster mention. I might try that.
I find those little toasted peanut butter crackers are even better. And you can get them in packages of 4 or 6 crackers so they work well as being a single serving individually wrapped.
I did the gel and Powerbar thing until the Special Needs station. This is where I had 2 McDonalds burgers, Choco Chip cookies, and pretzels waiting for me!! The burgers were awesome after 65 miles of gels and bars. I also took a sodium tab every 45 minutes (Florida).
The burgers will stay nice and cold when they are placed in a very small flexible cooler (Walgreens) and placed into the special needs bag. I quickly stopped, took them from the tiny cooler (they were just big enough for each burger), put the coolers back into the bag to be left behind and away I went.
Definitely try it in training ffirst. Honestly, when first hearing taco bell and IM I was a little skeptical, but if it’s mild and a food that you eat frequently, I bet you’ll be fine.
Peanut butter and honey sandwiches for me. I think I ate 6 of tthem last year at IMMOO.
Interesting ideas on this thread. Two weeks ago I did my longest ride in 17 years, a 112 ride/4 mile run in prep for IMoo and one of the biggest reasons was to try my nutrition plan. Man, it sucked!
Plan was 3 bottles infinit (my custom blend that had been working for me on long rides up to 4 hours), gel every hour and salt every hour along with water. Stomach felt like $hit at the end. I honestly felt like a stuffed sausage the last hour and a half and it was all I could do to get one more gel down. Not sure if it was too much salt, not enough water, the gel in combo with the infinit, the protein in the infinit…all I know is it didn’t work.
This weekend is another long one (100 mile ride, 30 min run) and I’m gonna try solid food on the bike and see what happens.
Not sure about taco bell sauce though, and I’m a total spicy/mexican food junky!
I’m telling you, processed white bread and peanut butter and honey are delicious and worked perfectly for a 55 degree rainy day. However, I do kind of wonder if it would have bummed me out in 95 degree weather.
Peanut butter and honey sandwiches for me.

That’s actually one of my favorite things to eat. But they fall into the “sweet” category. I’ll try the Taco Bell sauce this Sunday and report back. Hey, we could try the Elvis: Fuel for Kung Foo Fighting Plan and go with fried PB and Banana sandwiches.
+1
I carry PB&Honey on Wheat sandwiches in my bike jersey on long rides. I did 80 yesterday and ate 1 before the ride, 1 at mile 25, and one at mile 55. Ate one more about 1 hr after the ride. Feel great today. I prefer the low fat PB, and it has a good bit of sodium too.
I carry one bottle of super strong gatorade and a bottle of water, which I refill as needed in ride. I can ride with plenty of energy a long a$$ time on the magic PB& Honey combo.
I agree, this is a recipe for heartburn. It’s not the acidity of the sauce, but the fact that tomato lowers the Lower Esophageal Sphicter(LES) pressure. Combine that with a stomach full of fluid/food, and the aero position and you could have a miseable race.
holy crap about the tomatoes
that explains a lot
