Anyone out there have any notably “bad” experiences w supplements in general and Hammer Nutrition / E-Caps in particular?
The whole concept of ingesting un-regulated products makes me nervous…guess I do rely on the Government quite a bit…damn, can’t be a Libertarian I guess.
Not the specific companies you’re talking about, but the Kicker Vencill saga is enough to get you to swear off supplements for good.
I have had great experiences. Supplements digest vey easy. I did have an issue with what I think was an Endurolyte capsule. I took it on a long run and it upset my stomach pretty bad. Although, it could have been a number things that caused this… Overall, great company and great products.
I have been taking supplements for 20+ years. I have never had a “bad” experience, especially with Hammer Nutrition. I try to get most from a healthy well balanced diet, but with high volume or high intensity I feel the need for supplements.
If you are relying on the government to protect you, well you could always take viox - you might not die.
There are good and bad in every industry. Stick with the well known companies and their recommendations.
Live like you mean it!

Never any bad experiences. I wouldn’t take a lot of what they sell (eCaps particularly), because I don’t think it helps and there is no scientific evidence for a lot of it helping (like Xobaline – explain to me what 20,000% of the RDA of a water soluble vitamin - B - is going to do for me??).
But I think the quality of the products is very high. And they also don’t manufacture any products that are on the WADA banned list, so you don’t have to worry about cross-contamination like you might with TwinLab or some of the others that make bodybuilding products as well.
They are a very helpful and friendly company, and the Hammer stuff is certainly very good. They publish a lot of useful information. Much needs to be taken with a grain of salt, since it is certainly self-promoting, but a lot of it is also good (like Soy protein during and Whey protein after exercise).
I use a lot of the hammer stuff for ironam, perpetuem and endurolytes. Never had problems, i think their stuff is great:-)
Endurolytes sometimes cause my intestines to cramp during races, such that I have to keep running after the finish line, but they also have worked well to prevent/stop leg cramps for me.
I’ve never had any problems with any Hammer products; Hammer Gel, Sustained Energy, Perpentum, Endurolytes, Recoverite.
Not trying to start a fight, but I always think it’s sort of funny when people complain about supplements not being regulated, when about 100,000 people die every year from the drugs that ARE regulated. Hell, about 100 people die every day from taking asprin.
And by the way, our industry is very well regulated. Supplements are regulated by the government pretty much the same way that food is. So yes, they are very well regulated.
I don’t know much about Hammer’s products, but it appears that most of them are electrolyte, vitamin, or calorie type products. These are some of the safest products made.

Wasn’t “complaining” that supplements aren’t regulated - heck, as someone pointed out, Vioxx went through clinical trials, FDA approval et al, and still killed folks.
Rather, was making a joke at the same time I was asking a question.
The post should have asked more about the efficacy of the products - as opposed to solely focusing on their safety.
No offense taken. That’s one of the problems with computers, it’s hard to read the nuances of what people mean. I was trying to give a friendly response, so hopefully it came across that way.
Can’t help you much with how well the products work. I’ve taken their Perpetuem and e-caps and they seemed to do their job. The thing I liked about the Perpetuem is it is very palatable after a couple hours of riding. Don’t know if it made me any faster though.
Good luck in your research.
Jeff
I think different supplements/nutrition work differently for different people.
I like Endurox recovery drink, Endurox Excel pills, Carboom Gels, Gatorade Endurance Drink.
My stomach doesnt like Extran Meal replacement drink, and magonate. Both good products, but dont work for me.
