Bad crash...broken clavicle.....season over! Part 3......Vineman?

June 21, crashed and broke left collarbone. Complete comminuted mid-clavicle break. Was 7 1/2 weeks from the Full Vineman and in best of form to go sub 11. Thought it was all over. But maybe not!

At day 10, the ortho looked at the x-ray and examined the shoulder. Was amazed at how solid the bones were. Apparently, material was building in between the bones already. That gave me great encouragement

It is now day 17. This weeks schedule will be 180 miles on the trainer and 30 miles power walking at :14:45 pace per mile. Have not been able to get to the pool yet because still have three road rash scabs that have not healed over yet. Can’t go to work so might as well train with whatever I have left.

My question; can I get back enough to do the race? Instead of sub 11, will go for a sub 12. My longest run when I crashed was 14 miles at 8:55 pace. I had intended to go 16-18-20 all at 8:55 pace. I did though hit 19.5 miles in March during the end of base before I switched to Olympic build and racing. Not worried about the biking. Did lots of 100s this year. It is easy riding the trainer while watching the Tour. As for the swimming, was ramping that up when I went down. Have greatly improved my swimming this year (around :23:00 for Oly swim splits) though. Lots of 4000s during base. Figure to hold my base endurance for whatever may come while I heal up. Also dealing with trochanteric busitis on the hip I fell on. It is getting better but I still have a half “golf ball” that I am icing and stretching and massaging.

On the 22nd of July, have another appointment with the ortho. That will be 4 1/2 weeks since the crash. I hope that the bones will be “of one” again. If so, figure I can start easy 2 arm swimming. Because I had a deep base this year, I could go into this race with a reverse taper. In other words, build into it. I figure if I can do a 1 hour open water swim, a 90 mile bike and t-run, and a 2 1/2 hour run, in a 3 day period about 10 days or so before the race, I’m good.

thanks,

Conrad

PS would have been 6 in a row for the Full Vienman. I already have the time off from work. I did pull out but could still get back in probably.
