Bad break (w/ pic)

R10C told a story about how some stranger told him ST’ers are a**holes. I’ve been around (though mostly silent) for quite some time now and heartily disagree. I’ve always found ST’ers to be the type of helpful folks you’d want to have happen upon you if you were stuck in the desert with a flat. Anyway, here’s a chance to help out a young man:

My good friend and training buddy has a 14-year-old son, Danny. Danny’s a good kid and a promising swimmer. This summer he did one of the Los Angeles Playa Del Run events in ~33 minutes. That’s 1000m ocean swim followed by 5k run. He was second oa out of the water. Danny wants to try a triathlon so I gave him an old bike of mine to use. It’s an old Klein Quantum with Dura Ace 8-speed. My friend told me that Danny was so excited when he got the bike that he spent the entire afternoon washing and polishing it.

Sunday, Fernando (my friend), Danny and I went for a ride on Pacific Coast Highway. On the return, we were just coming up on the intersection of PCH and Sunset Blvd. For those who don’t know the area, there’s a brief space with no shoulder to speak of. Apparently, a car squeezed Danny a bit too much. He ended up clipping the guardrail with his right shifter and going right over the handlebars. He landed on his helmet and shoulder in the street. Amazingly, he barely got a scratch on him. Other than two 1/4 inch scratches on his elbows and a bruise on his thigh, he’s perfectly fine. (I wish I were 14 again!)

The bike was not so lucky: though all of the components are fine, the frame broke clean through just behind the head tube. Here’s a pic:

Now we’re a bit stuck. We were planning on having Danny do the Long Beach Sprint as his first race. It’s in a couple of weeks. But he doesn’t have a bike.

The point: Do you know where we can get a good deal on a used small frame on which we could put the components we already have? Do you have something hanging in your garage you’d be willing to part with for a reasonable price? The Klein was a 49cm but he could go a little larger than that. Easiest would be an oversize aluminum frame like what we’ve got.

Thanks for listening.

I have a used K2 Mod5.0 road frame (size small, it’s a compact frame, probably closer to 52-53cm frame-- I’m about 5’6") that I’d be happy to part with. $100 including shipping, of $50 if you want to drive up the coast to San Luis Obispo to pick it up?

The catch is that it’s got a pretty big dent in the top tube from where a Park tool shop stand (against which my dear husband thoughtfully left his bike leaning) fell on it. Hence, I don’t think I’ll be able to sell the frame for much of anything. The frame itself is fine, and I rode it for some time after the denting.

It’s blue/white/silver. Carbon fork, carbon seatstays, headset included (and maybe a seatpost/stem-- I’m not sure what’s on there right now)

Email me at altocinco gmail com if you’re interested.

i’d help if i had a frame around.

get on ebay and look at the leader bike store, they have some nice alum frames for about 137 shipped. i used to have one, decently light frames in some bright colors.

I don’t have a frame that small but will gladly pitch a little cash to get him on a frame if one can be found.

I’d second the idea of going to Leader. They will get it to you fast too. They have a lot of clearance 2007 bike frames for $119 right now. Nothing flashy, just vanilla frames, but the price is really fantastic. You know the kids gonna grow out of it soon anyway.

lc21998,

Is your subject line necessary? That’s a strong allegation. If no one helps your little friend out or provides a good tip for a bike deal then we’re all A-holes? Just on principle alone I’d be offended into in-action rather than action. Not the most diplomatic plea for help.

As for the upcoming athlete’s bike. go to craigslist and you may find some good deals on older, decent bikes.

NiceTri,

Sorry it didn’t go over well. It was meant to be funny (did you read R10C’s post?) and not get instantly relegated to the back pages. I know that even if you don’t help out, you’re not an a**hole. Really. That’s why I’m asking here in the first place.

(Just for you, I’ve changed the subject line. How about some action now?)

Thanks for the suggestion re Leader. I hadn’t thought of that.

Thanks. I’ll talk to fernando and let you know via email.

Benjamin,

Nice. Thanks.

Hate to say it again…but ebay or craigslist may still be your best bet…unless someone on ST has an old frame like you’ve asked.
I for one do not have anything that small.

I just browsed through CL for LA and OC and there are a couple, but mostly larger heavy frames.

Assuming nothing is bent, and that it is the weld that failed, why don’t you just go to a capable machine shop and spend $20 to have it welded again?

I’ll third the Leader recommendation since it meets your criteria (oversized AL tubing, small size, inexpensive). They have a good size run and are relatively cheap. I commute on an older Leader model and have no issues with it.
