So I am going in for Microdisketomy as soon as they can fit me in, I should hear tomorrow.
I was curious what did you do coming off of surgery?
Did you do anything right away? Dr says I can be swimming very quickly (2 weeks or sooner)
Did you lift weights?
How long until running? (I think I am going to wait a while no matter what the Dr says)
Cycling and racing?
What did you do to keep from going nuts?
Pain after surgery?
My doctor said three weeks of nothing after the surgery, including avoiding sitting. This is the time that will make or brake how you heal–specifically in the scar tissue department. If you do too much and create scar tissue, then you could find yourself in the same spot as you are now, only with a much poorer surgical prognosis.
You should be pain-free after the surgery in terms of your nerve pain. There is discomfort in the area where the surgery is performed.
I think that you will find many different answers to your question of when people start to swim/bike/run afterthis surgery. The better shape you go into it, I think the faster you will be back at it. I was having difficulty walking pre-surgery so my recovery was pretty long.
Ask your PT these questions. You’ve been going all along right? I found that my PTs were a much better source of information post-surgery than the surgeon. Follow up care is not always a surgeon’s forte.
To keep from going nuts, we got cable TV–the Soccer World Cup and the Olympcis were on that summer! Also, I set up a lap top and my kitchen counter and did some work standing up.
Hope this helps.

One more thought. You’ve mentioned your struggles with alchohol before. Does your surgeon know that? That was one of the first questions my surgeon asked me when we got to a timetable. She said that she squeezes in patients as soon as possible that have prior addiction issues due to the risks of pain medication. Maybe this might help you get onto the schedule sooner rather than later.
Good luck!

Thank you.
I am still waiting to hear, I have a call in to the Dr. I will mention it! It cant hurt.
Luckily for me I have never really had issues with chemical abuse other than alcohol. I am not worried about pain medication, but anything that gets healthy quicker.
Thanks again.
I just had an L4-5 minimally invasive TLIF with bilateral decompression on the 28th, last thursday. My first post OP doc appt is scheduled for 10th and they will assess PT then.
My Doc wanted me to start walking right away. The last three days I am up to 2 miles a day in one stretch. I will be up to 4 miles a day by Fri in 2 sessions. My doc said that I could start swimming, without pushing off the wall, as soon as the wounds healed. Then start adding core exercises. And being able to ride a recumbent bike, up to the PT, well before riding a road bike. Running is out of the question for awhile.
I asked him if doing a sprint toward the end of August would be doable and he said, not likely. However, he did say I could golf multiple 18 hole days by then.
Keep in mind I had a fusion. It takes about a year for the vertebra to fuse together.
Sorry for the grammar and spelling, pain killers are wacking me out. Try to get an E-stem, mine is from Zynex Medical. I’ve had that on 24/7 since the surgery and the back stays pretty loose.
PM me if you have any other questions.

Thank you.
At this point I just want to be out of pain.
Then do some swimming. Get back on the bike and in the gym lifting (light weights) and just be working out!
Then after some strengthening Pilates etc. I might look at returning to running 4 weeks after it seems right:)
Best of luck my friend!
