Back / Hip Pain--Theories?

I’ve had pain in my hips for a little while now and it seems to have caused a compensatory issue in my lower back. I sought out a chiro on the advice of some toher active folks and have good results–back is a 100%, hips are at 90%. My question is–what could have caused this to happen?

Background / Potential Factors I can think of:

–Late May new running shoes, June posted highest monthly mileage YTD; previously I had run in incarnations of the same brand/model for years, this was a new brand/model
–Early March new bike, new pedals/cleats, new shoes, June posted previous high mileage YTD, July did that same June mileage in one week, which was approximately a week before my back/hips fell apart

My question–Is it more likely the running shoes, or more likely the new position/fit of the new bike/shoes/pedals/cleats combo? Or is just overtraining with the huge leaps in run mileage in Jun, bike mileage in July?

I’m trying to figure out if I just need to adjust training, or adjust my seat height, or what?

Poor core strength/endurance I suspect with over use injury.

This is going to sound stupid, but do you fly or drive a lot? I has having hip problems during my heaviest travel time of last year. I started taking my wallet out of my back pocket whenever I got on an airplane and the problem gradually went away. A triathlete/doctor friend said the wallet was probably pressing on a nerve and doing damage that was aggravated by exercise.

I told you it would sound stupid…

I had some hip/back problems and found core exercises, stretching, massage to be very helpful. weak lower back or other core muscles or running on tight or over-used muscles can cause all kinds of chain reactions in your posture, or running gait. then you end up compensating with other muscles. couple that with a huge increase in mileage and sounds like a recipe for injury. Once I started being religious about core exercises and stretching, my back issues went away.

That resounds with my thinking. I actually was planning on taking up some yoga to suplement my run/bike/lift regimen. Just didn’t get to it soon enough.
