Average distance of training ride/run for half IM?

I’m trying to get a feel for people’s base distance rides…for instance twice a week I just go run or ride, and may finish a little fast but otherwise it is a recovery/base effort.

I usually run 6 or 7 with some strides, or ride for 20 miles with some natural fartleks.

Any other thoughts?

Of course, it depends on when in the training cycle it is. Assuming it’s not in the first couple of weeks, weekday rides are 30-40 miles each (approx. three of these) with good hills worked in and weekend ride is 60-80 miles. Run 4-5 times per week, weekday runs 5-7 miles, with one day of speedwork. Weekend long run of 10-15 miles. But others have had great success with much less. . . and much more.

Averages don’t mean much, since workouts of varying lengths serve different purposes. I’ve found that my 70.3 performance is dependent on how many 10mi+ runs and 3hr+ rides I do.

My basic rides are about 100min. and runs about 4 miles, but it’s the longer stuff that really makes a difference (i.e. moving my average run to 5 min wouldn’t compensate for doing fewer 10mi runs).

Thanks for the replies…sounds like I need to increase my rides by quite bit. Do people, in general, ride one workout and run one workout a week? Or more? I don’t really do any bike workout, but I run a tempo, and interval session, and some hill strides every week.

when I am training seriously for a 1/2 iron I will run around 20 mi/w, bike 125 mi/w, and swim 7500 yds/w, for 12 or so hours.

I just got a bike, and have been going on 90-120 minute rides. Legs have been dead enough after 120 that I probably need to work on building base to that point before I think about going further.

Bike: 2x30 miles, 1x56+
Run: As many as I can, 1 long approaching 13 mi at peak.
Swim: As little as possible to prevent drowning.
