Australian football 'spekkie': Not tri related

The word is "spekkie’ which is short for “spectacular mark”…you might also use the word “hanger”, as in he has hanging in the air for a long time…you might also use the word “screamer”, for this is what the crowd does when one takes a spekkie or a hanger…

A picture is worth a 1000 words:

It’s a beautiful sight!!!

Carn the Blues!!!

C’mon guys…the point is to showcase Australian sport to the (sometimes ignorant) North American community…but having said that “Go the Lions!”
.

Aussie rules is incredible. It’s a full contact, balls-to-the-walls, throw-your-whole-body-into-it into sport. (Sort of what appeals to me about triathlon.)

There was quite a bit on US cable TV about 10 years ago. My favorite player was Peter Summic sp? of West Coast Eagles. He had a lot of style as a player, even though at the time West Coast was an also ran.

Not much coverage on TV any more here. Just an hour covering one game, some highlights and the standings.

How big are these guys anyway? I’m guessing that the other Eagle in that picture is about 6’3", 210 lbs while Sampi is 5’10", 165 lbs.

Peter Sumich is the player to which you refer: http://westcoasteagles.com.au/default.asp?pg=coaches&spg=assistcoachprofile&personid=13883

Like alot of sports, player size varies - all shapes and sizes. Shortest guy in the AFL would be 5 " 6’ and tallest, 6"10’…heaviest would be 240lb and the lightest 140lb…

The guy in the front of Sampi would be at least 6 foot tall…

Proof again that Aussie Rules, Rules!

The best form of football in the world!
