Austin, Tx

I am currently in Austin, Tx. from St. Louis for work related training and am looking for a good place to ride. I brought my bike and rode it from T.D.P.S. where I’m staying and back, and got a flat tire. Are there any road bike specific close to the T.D.P.S. Also, I swam at Barton Springs, and was told about a place called “Big Eddy” anyone know where this is? I am a newbie, but would love the opportunity to ride with some other people sometime. I am here until the middle of August.

You need to hook up with TriATX - he will see your post I am willing to bet.

When you get a free chance you should go over to Austin Tricyclist and ask to speak to Don. He has a wealth of knowledge on where to ride and swim. In addition, there is always three or four people hanging out at the shop going for a ride and you could team up with them. Finally, every Saturday at 8:30 there is a group ride of about 30-50 people that is alot of fun. Best part is the breakfast tacos waiting for you back at the shop!

PM if you have any questions.

I went to Run Tex, I’ll try to find Tricyclist…thanks.

TDPS, as in Texas Dept. of Public Safety? If so which TDPS location? There are lots of them. The big one up near 51st and Lamar? Tough riding out of there. You’d be in traffic for quite some time. If you can give me a general idea of where you are, I can suggest a few places. Definitely come out to the ATC Taco Ride on Saturdays at 8:30. It’s a lotta fun.

When you say “Big Eddy,” I think you are referring to Deep Eddy. It’s just west of MoPac and just south of Lake Austin Blvd. Here is a map.

Yeah, it’s Deep Eddy. I am at the T.D.P.S. on Lamar near Koenig. Where is ATC?

Austin tricyclist is on barton springs road, from you take koenig west which turns into 2222, 2222 to mopac to rollingwood exit. take the turn around and stay on the exit, that turns into barton springs road, ATC is on the right about 2 blocks past lamar. there’s a time trial tonight on s. mopac

If you go to Jack and Adam’s web site www.jackandadams.com they have a list of great bike routes on their “maps” page and other tri-specific information, also, they have rides a few times a week. If you were going to ride solo and were up for a challenge I recommend the dam loop but don’t try it during the day. Deep Eddy is also a spring fed pool on the north side of town lake by magnolia cafe. Its more of a typical pool with lanes and what not but I prefer Barton Springs because it emulates the open water feel. Austin Tricyclists and Jack and Adam’s are almost across the street from each other, i’ve never been to AT but I’m sure they are great there as well.

I’ve also recently started a yahoo group for fledgling triathletes that I know from team-in-training. We post there to arrange rides/runs, all intermediate level stuff. If you were interested I’d be more than happy to add you to it.

Deep Eddy is in the “north side of town”??? You must live waaaaaay south because it’s smack dab in the middle of town

It’s about 50 ft from the north side of the river.

LOL… oops… he wrote “north side of town lake”… I just saw “north side of town”… ignore me and carry on

We all have our moments.

You could probably ride out from TDPS to get to some decent riding, but it’d take a while. Take 2222 to Shoal Creek and follow Shoal Creek south. The trail will take you under MoPac to Zilker Park where you can ride out on the Dam Loop or the ATC Jack Brown Loop. All of these will be pretty trafficky, though.

austintri, thanks for the offer, and add me to the group. My email address is gmcintyre@lakesaintlouis.com. Let me know if you need anything else.
