I’ve been in Austin a few years now and I am now injury free and training again. Ive spmewhat unwisely decided to train though the TX summer for a fall marathon. Mostly none of my friends do much in the way of endurance sports training. I’ve been running mostly solo for a little over a year and I am tired of it. Any good groups on weekends for long runs? I am mostly open to paces and suggestions.
I moved a little over a year ago from Austin, but I did a Tuesday morning run at 6 am at Luke’s Locker on Town Lake/Lamar (the taco run) and we had a pretty fast group. maybe 4-5 guys around 35-37 min for 10k, with another 20 or so at speeds down from there.
I am in 2 areas for the most part. I live in Lakeway but work downtown and do most of my running in town. I like the idea of trail running for the summer but I have an ankle that has been operated on 3x so I have generally avoided anything that is not relatively smooth.
The lukes run at 6 may be a possibility. While I am not in 35-37 min 10K shape at the moment (more like 39 min) I may be able to find someone there to hang onto. I’ve found most of the groups that meet after 6 am are running more in the 8 min plus range rather than below. There is a rogue group that could be a good fit but it meets at 5:30 am which coming in from Lakeway is a non-starter. I will look into the Sat ARC one this weekend. Finding folks for the weekend long runs will be the most helpful I think.
One more option for Saturday mornings - PAC (Pure Austin Coaching) offers free workouts at Austin High at 7am. They are usually track speed/tempo workouts, but longer than most (~8-12 miles/workout). They are also fairly flexible in that you can do less sets/miles if you aren’t up for the full thing yet. The workouts are posted weekly to the Pure Austin Coaching Facebook page.
I’m headed down to Austin this week for a Wednesday AM meeting (I land at 4pm on Tuesday). I hope to run the Town Lake trail a couple of times before I fly back on Thursday afternoon.
I’m assuming you only work M-F? So a weekend run that is downtown (which most of the ones mentioned are) wouldn’t work, right?
Lakeway is a beautiful area. My fiance graduated from high school there and her parents still live off Falcon Head (well, they’re moving next week, but still). Running 620 can be awesome FWIW. Some drivers, however, are A*holes and think its funny to go into the shoulder just to mess with you.
I’d second all of the groups mentioned. I have run with the Dallas Luke’s Group before and you find a really wide spread of paces/people. I’d also add “Hill Country Running” if they haven’t been mentioned already.
If nothing really works out for you, PM me what you’re looking to do and we could maybe meet up. I’m fortunate enough to not have a strict work schedule until mid-September, but then I’ll be joining you in having to schedule runs around work. Also FWIW, I’ve found its A LOT easier to run at night than in the morning.
I doubt that I can get the CR. But from looking at the leader board, I’m want to beat #6.
That’s a fun loop. I’ve always wondered, for loops like this, do you need to start where the start point on Strava is, or can you start anywhere so long as you do the same route? I live downtown and can easily access the loop at the 5-ish mile point on that map. That would be my point-0 though.
Hey there,
Maybe you can help me out since your local.
I’m in Austin (staying at the W) Thursday - Saturday. What would be the best pool to get in a hour and a half swim?
I am in Austin as well and I have found myself in a very similar situation. I would say I do 95% of my training on my own. The problem is, many of these groups I have researched have some sort of a membership fee that I just can’t bring myself to cough up in order to run with them. It would be nice to know which ones are free to meet with versus the ones you pay for and how they compare. Maybe it would even be possible to organize a local Austin STers meet up for runs on the regular?
You have to run through the start point then all along the path and finish at the end point. If it was a clock, you’d have to run 12:00 to 12:00. If you start at 10:00, you’d have to run a full loop to 10, then on past 12 for the segment.

Are you a member of any national gym? (i.e., the Y, 24 Hr fitness)
Do you have access to a car?
Unfortunately, downtown Austin doesn’t have a pool readily available. The closest one is at the YMCA on Ceasar Chavez. You can get a 1-day pass, but otherwise have to be a member. The next closest indoor pool is at 24 Hr Fitness near 41st street (north of UT). You can get a 1-week free trial pass here.
There are a couple of outdoor pools as well. Deep Eddy is a natural spring with lane markers/stripes. One length is 44 yds I believe. Cost is roughly $3. Additionally, Barton Springs is a good choice and is as close to an OWS as you’ll get here. Before 8 AM is free. One length is 1/8 mile and there is no system. But hey, topless sunbathing is allowed, so that’s a perk.

But what if I started at 5 and ran to 5 again, crossing through 10, 11, 12, etc.?
