Austin 70.3 (1)

Anyone have any information on this race? How well run is it? How is the course? Etc.

Neal

You should search this forum, its been talked about a lot. I did it last year, great course and very well run and cool city to hang out in afterwards. The RD puts a lot of pride into this race, maked imporvements every year. Cant miss

As the other poster said, there have been numerous discussions on this race, most in the positive. My own race report is archived in my blog: http://off242.blogspot.com/2008/10/longhorn-703.html.

Hey Neal, Austin will be my first 1/2. All I have heard is positive things about it. The race director post on BT in the Texas forum some, so if you have any questions go over there and ask him.

The RD posts here too when he’s not slumming it down at BT.

I have a specific question regarding the run course. I understand it’s not exactly the same as previous years. My question is …what % of the run is paved roads vs unpaved? I’m asking because I don’t do well on uneven running surfaces and would like to know what to expect.

I’m back, baby! Out of the loop for a couple of days…
3.5 miles of the 13.1 are on grass/dirt service roads in the park:)

Lots o’ great new stuff for 2009, including the Stadium finish at Luedecke Arena. You’ll run into the tunnel and finish right in the middle. Great for families, too. Great food, concessions…

Absolutely fantastic race. Extremely well run. Be prepared for a non-wetsuit swim.
Bike is well supported and the course is challenging, but not crazy hard.
Run is very tough. There is not a flat spot on the 13.1.

If they use the same grassy area and service roads as the Oly race I did there
the surface was fairly managable except for one area. Of course it’s been 2-3yrs
and it has rained since but I think they maintain that area pretty well.

it hasn’t rained much at all in the last 2 years.

What is this “rain” thing of which you speak?

funnily enough, it actually sprinkled at Longhorn last year. When I say “sprinkled”, I mean maybe 20 drops of rain:)

Is it common that the water is too warm for wetsuits?

The first year it wasn’t wetsuit legal. Last year it was. The race is 3 weeks later this year, so I’m guessing it’ll be wetsuit-legal:)

Thanks, KJ. I’m looking forward to the race.

me too:)
