Can anyone give me some input on the Savannah River? ie currents, clarity, and thickness of water. Does anyone even swim in that River? Thank you for whatever info you can give.
I used to row on the Savannah (I’m from Augusta and have attended rowing camps there) and have flipped my shell and gone swimming several times. It’s not particularly clear but not brackish or disgusting, either. Close to shore, there’s lots of plant life near the surface.
As for current, I believe it’s a little bit stronger on the Georgia side than on the South Carolina side (though I’m going off of memory from long ago here).
Overall, I wouldn’t be worried about swimming in the Savannah, though I’ve never seen anyone other than rowers in the water. It may be more that there’s a lot of boat traffic in that area (and perhaps an ordinance forbidding swimming in the river), rather than the water quality. And only fairly recently has the SC side been developed. AND there aren’t a ton of entries into the water – off the top of my head, there’s the Marina and the rowing center.
Hope this helps.
Thank you very much for the info.
