Ok a quick question for the people out there who have had au pairs. What did you do about Insurance for the young lady? I’m working out the details of having a girl I know come over from Scotland to be an au pair for me. SO im not going through an agency or anything. I want her to have a car available to her in case of emergencies but am not sure about the insurance stuff for car or for health insurance. Anyone else know anything about this? Thanks
When we had our au pair, I simply called our insurance agent, explained the issue and that was it. I believe for our auto coverage, anyone driving the car is covered. Can’t help you on the health insurance front. We went through an agency and they took care of that.
If you don’t go through an agency you are hiring an illegal alien. Seriously
not if they acquire the proper visa.
Assuming you are talking about car insurance, I added the au pair onto my policy, and that was one of the worst decisions I made. Being the friendly head of the house I decided that it was ok for the au pair to drive my AMG Benz with my kids (it was after all said, the safest of the cars on the driveway). Well, the dumb ass crashed it in the preschool parking lot of all places. The girl also crashed the Pathfinder I had for her to drive (another fender bender). After a year, she was gone, After THREE years, I will stop paying the additional surcharge for the “non-family” driver who crashed my cars.
I am not sure if there is another proper and legal way to set this up in a household so that you can avoid liability…good luck!
