I encountered a group of ATV riders on a back road at the cottage two weeks ago while out for a bike ride. It was a regular paved county road and thus, the ATV’s where not supposed to be there. One rider did not even have a helmet on. ATV’s have become a bit of a problem in our area - they are NOT allowed on the county roads. They are NOT allowed on any of the off-road trails in our area as these are all snow-mobile trails and are posted for snow-mobile use only. In fact we should not really be seeing them anywhere. To my knowledge, they are only allowed on private land, yet I keep seeing more and more of them. Why would someone spend thousands of dollars on something that legally thay have very little or no area to ride? When stopped and questioned about their actions, which I do regularly, I get everything from the dumb approach, “gee I didn’t know” to the, “#&*%-off. I will do whatever I want to” answer. Nice!
Yep. It’s becoming a big political issue here in Idaho, as it’s impacting hunting and how people hunt.
The mountains behind my house are supposed to be off-limits to wheeled traffic- no cars, no bikes, no dirt bikes, no ATVs. I’ll spend all day hiking up to go hunting, and get passed probably five or six times by some idiot on an ATV who apparently can’t read the sign. It is quite irritating.
MN is going through a lot of state and local controversies right now between different segments of the population and their contrasting land-use activities. While not making a blanket statement about ATVers, the “EFF off” comment/attitude is one I’ve come across.
But I best not get involved in this conversation though. I find ATV’s about as appealing as a 2-stroke jet ski on a quiet lake around 8pm in the evening, and next thing I know, Vitus will have my silkies all knotted up…

minny, you AF patsie, you had better scroll down and cast your vote, or else! You want your voice to be heard, right? This is America, right? We love democracy, right? Move it!
Let me guess… your a rope-burnin’, sandal-wearing, beaded-necklase making, tofu-eating, hacky-sack playing hippy. Living the good life up there in Sandpoint. And you want MY vote?!? maybe.

There seems to be less and less concern for what one the impact of one’s activities are on another. It’s all about me! Screw everyone else.
I use my families cottage as a barometer of this sort of thing. 20 year’s ago common sense seemed to rule. No one bothered anyone else in any way. Now a week does not go by with out an encounter with a rowdy ATV rider, a noisy jet ski, a huge unmufflered boat roaring by or a stero blaring from across the lake. What happened?
