ATOC host cities: Bakersfield? WTF?

Instead of descending back to Bonelli, why not take it all the way to the ski lifts or Manker Flats and then run to the summit of Baldy.

I vote for 60k TT GMR/east fork/39 next year.

Flat enough to still use a TT bike but hilly enough to even out climbers/pure TTers.Nah… Encanto to Long beach via the bike trail. With dogs and crazy people as obstacles.

thanks for sharing the story

though i have to say, for a second i thought i was reading Steinbeck.

it is frankly hard for me to think of a city closer to truly outstanding road cycling than bakersfield.

Los Gatos

Surrounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains and, well… it’s not Bakersfield.

Trona

  1. Victorville
  2. Stockton
  3. Hayward (like Oakland without the charm)
  4. Hollister
  5. Baker
  6. Turlock

Bakersfield definitely is in the top 10, though.

Fixed it. Trona is about the most depressing town in CA.

Just watched the coverage. Seems like it could have been a nice enough area without all the oil fields, but those overhead shots were hideous. Zabriskie even mentioned how there was nothing to look at on that course:).

i’ve done los gatos. i’ll take the greenhorns (southern sierras). the gateway to which is… well… you know.

Plus, in Bakersfield, there’s a good chance you’ll catch some Buck or Merle on the radio.

Your endorsement reminds me of a job interview I had in Sacramento. The big selling point was “we are less than 90 minutes from Napa, San Francisco AND Tahoe!”. Not to hate on Sacramento but I will take route 1 over route 99 every day.

i wouldn’t live in sacto. but i WOULD live in placerville. or auburn. likewise, i wouldn’t live in bako, but i didn’t think we were talking about living there. as a locale, to host a stage of the ATOC, nearby (not 90 minutes away, rather, nearby) is great riding.

i live where i do because of the riding. ATOC chose the route i drew up for the city of palmdale 2 years ago, when they were a host city then. they’ll be climbing up our mtn right outside the compound, which has had some pretty good times set on it by rappstar and bjorn. monty and i are going to try to time them up this thing, see what sort of time they do.

$#it, I’m getting old if this is “back in the day” now.

Loved the Bub Rub mix table!

If you like Alpine mountain riding you would like the Cascades around Shasta. They have an awesome ride up there called Summit Century: http://shastasummitcentury.com/
