Anyone’s work schedule allow them to partake Tuesday?
Luckily, I’m off all week. It’s not the training ride that I had planned, but…how could I pass on this.
We all know that Atlanta is not very bike friendly. So, if I’m going to complain about it, I better be doing my part to have cycling recognized and respected.
I realized most of you will be at work. But, if not… put your Tuesday 70 miler on hold and do a recovery spin down to the capitol.
Good turnout for a Tuesday, a very cold (for Atl) Tuesday. Large pokie escort, ez pace, good conversation down to the capitol. groups broke up and went a little harder when we headed home, so it was nice to get some sweat in thanks to the hills.
Picking up a large group from East Cobb and here we converged with a large group from Decatur. I tried to ride up front to avoid broken road, so this pic doesn’t really show how big the merge was. http://i40.tinypic.com/2rzcheu.jpg
Then enjoyed big words from senators and representative at the steps of the capitol. Ironically, we arrived on the day that the DOT was voting on budget, which (I’m told) had 0 bike paths in it. http://i43.tinypic.com/eite1v.jpg
Would rather have a sidealk on one side and normal bike lanes on both sides. Single multi-use trails suck for road cyclists.
It will be interesting to see what Commissioner Bob Ott does. He won the GOP primary, which is the election in Cobb County, because cyclists came out in force against his opponent, incumbent Commissioner Joe Thompson, after he tried banning cycling on Columns Drive. Ott also used to be a triathlete.
My interest in the path has little to do with being a triathlete.
It has to do with the recreation and fitness opportunities for everyone, especially families.
Kids and families can’t use bike lanes.
A sidewalk is useless as a connector to the Rosewell paths.
Parents can’t ride with their kids on a sidewalk (actually, unlike in Chicago and other areas, NOBODY can ride a bike on the sidewalk in Georgia).
A 10 foot wide, paved path would be an incredible quality of life improvement for the area.
Seriously, the thought of it makes me giddy – it will help this East Cobb area breakfree from it’s car (who am I kidding, not car, SUV) reliant mindset.
Ott’s solution (if I got it right) was a sidewalk on the north side. An 8 foot wide multiuse path on the south side.
The bike lanes are intact.
Cross walks and pedestrian refuge islands at certain points.
And then a bunch of stuff I didn’t follow as well that had to do with turn lanes.
Actually I agree with you on the multi-purpose lane. They are better for families, which is why I fail to understand the opposition from some an area filled with subdivision. My email to bob Ott on this, stressed thee family benefits- “Think about the Children”- as well as increase home values for surrounding homes. The last county plan did away with the trail and only had one 5 foot sidewalk, which is where it stands unless something changed last night. Community activists are trying to get the trail back on the plan.
That being said, most multi-use lanes are of no use to road cyclists, and I avoid them just as I do sidewalks.
BTW - When I am caught by police riding on the sidewalk trying to avoid congested roads, I just let them know that I do not have an ID and my name is Kevin Moats. I carry a sunglass or helmet mirror for proof.
