Athletes as writers

Recently a thread generated a lot of heat on the tri forum about the merits of Scott Tinley’s columns in triathlete. It was a good thread, and provoked a lot of thoughtful responses on what constitutes good writing about sports.

This got me thinking about other current athlete columnists, including Will Frischkorn (for velonews) and Michael Barry (for Velonews and the NY Times). Mostly it got me thinking about what a damn good writer Doug Glanville is, who writes for the NY Times on line version. Below is a link to his latest column, which is as usual excellent, and, as usual, uses his experience in the major leagues as a starting off point for more profound, and universal, concerns. If you’re not familiar with these columns, read the whole series. It will be worth your time.

WOW!! That was amazingly hard to read. hahah

Not an athelete, but Brett Sutton has a masterful command of the language and artful prose.

Maybe unconventional, but I think that’s rather artful prose too.
