The problem with atheists is they don’t have book to follow. So their opinions are ALL OVER the freaking place!
This particular one says yeah, just as fucked up. But thankfully I don’t run into argumentative ones on message boards very often. Seems like only the Christians really want to mix it up in the LR. I guess that’s probably for the best, things could get complicated otherwise.

It’s funny 'cos I run into way more muslims in real life than I do on the internet, and vice versa for christians. Most of my friends are atheists and the ones who aren’t don’t talk about religion. I also live in an area with a lot of muslims (mostly persians) and they’re all very polite, friendly people who seem to benefit the community from their presence.
No different than my hood. Rural San Diego. Christians, Catholics. They dont rub their religion in my face, good people and benefit the community. And a couple of them brew some damn good beer!

This thread is 3 mths too late. There used to be a poster here (AnthonyS) that would always chime in that the atheists only picked on christians. Someone should have started this thread then. I have not heard from him in awhile on these topics. I sorta miss the guy, he had passion!
It’s really not all that offensive a question. Christians get blasted by Atheists literally on a daily basis in here, but Islam flies under the radar in most discussions.
As a non-believer who abstains in part for how I believe it conflicts with my humanist values, I can objectively measure religions against that standard. Christianity is far less offensive to me than Islam using that criteria, so while I’d rather all people disabuse themselves of the kind of magical thinking and cultural indoctrination that feeds the various religious entities, I’d be happy to see the stone-age iterations move to the front of the line for immediate departure.

The problem is, the reason is so obvious it’s almost not worth talking about.
I can name at least 3 or 4 VERY outspoken Christians who start threads with the express purpose of butting heads with the atheists. And the atheists do it too, so it’s not an unequal thing at all. There are also a lot of christians who may not start the threads but definitely participate.
If someone can find me an outspoken Muslim participant in any religion threads on the LR, I’ll be impressed.
It’s hard to debate on a forum with people who aren’t on the forum.
I understand that. But the OP wasn’t asking why we don’t debate Muslims; they were asking for atheists’ opinions on Islam, and since it is so rarely discussed in that context, I think it’s a reasonable question to ask. Aren’t you a little curious to know if, and why, atheists view all religions through the same lens, or as functional equivalents?
I wish there were a Muslim contingent on the forum. I think it would make for some fascinating and lively discussion.

These 3.5 religions (do we dig out the "are catholics christian? threads again?), of the many thousands, are root and branch of the same tree. For the purposes of assessing fuckedupedness, they are without meaningful distinction.
