At what weather condition would you bow out of a race?

I’m doing the son of spud tomorrow. The forecast looks pretty windy, 20-35 mph and some rain. Being a newbie, I’m a little skeptical about doing it. Would you do a race on an iffy weather condition?

How bad does it have to be for you to not race it?

Hurricane

Yes, mission must be completed

Yeah, but the Spud director won’t cancel the race. What’s up with that?

If the weather poses significant threat to life and limb, it isn’t worth it.

They have the race every year. I can just come back.

You know what else poses significant thread to life and limb? The Slowtwitch Tactical Team, which is on it’s way to your shop as we speak…

And to answer the topic question, I’d say snow/ice because it’s dangerous during the bike. Other then that, I’ll race through hell (good thing I never had to back this up, yet)

Maxim Magazine: August 2004, page 104- “The New >>Mona Lisa”.

What is your point?

That’s for sure. I’ve had training rides where the wind was around 20 mph. It was horribly frightening to say the least. I don’t think I could last in any wind stronger than that without being blown away. I’m about 105 lbs riding a fairly aero tri bike frame. Crosswind will be the death of me! I can’t figure out why the RD won’t simply cancel it.

No race poses significant threat…
It is the rider skills that put her in risk. If she trained in all conditions, has high level of skill and know how to assess road conditions then she will be fine.

I have raced in poor stormy conditions and although I did not meet my target time I was proud of myself - “stick to it” is my mantra. My legs felt frozen when I finished the run, but I finished the race, a good hot shower and back to the office the next day to make some serious money.

Uh, maybe you need to ride a differently equipped bike.

Just a thought.

Ooops, am I in a wrong forum?

A little cloudy, maybe a slight breeze, a little nip in the air, or possibly the humidity above 30%.

WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY, you’re a triathlete for god sakes, you don’t bow out of a race because of a little wind or bad weather. Go race and hang on to that bike like your life depends on it!!!

Are you from that tri-newbies site I keep hearing about?

: )

Actually, I just registered in there (TNO) this morning asking the same question. Haven’t seen any reply yet one way or another.

Ahh,sometimes I do feel I’m not worthy of being called a triathlete! :frowning:

nonsense, do you swim, bike, and run? You’re a triathlete, don’t listen to the elitists who think us slowpokes are somehow lesser than the fastest.

Seriously though, go ahead and race. The worst that happens is you drop out because it gets a little dangerous. Someone will give you a ride back to the transition area. Who cares?

Down here, a hurricane watch does not necessarily mean that a race will be cancelled. (though courses may be heavily modified because of troubling conditions) The common bad weather comparison here is “the year we raced Demolition Man right before Tropical Storm Barry came ashore”

We’re racing tomorrow morning in a show-n-go sprint here on Martha’s Vineyard. Forecast winds: southeast at 25 to 35 knots. Rains, heavy at times.

Bring it on!

I’ve raced and crashed a bike in 45mph cross winds. I’d personally leave the disc at home if that ever happens to me again. I’d still race though

“How bad does it have to be for you to not race it?”

If the race is on, I’ll race.

Hurricane or typhoon (I’m not prejudiced  ).

Tornado.

Although that COULD make your bike split faster… “Pedal, damn it, pedal! It’s coming this way!”

The race this morning was fantastic. I woke up at 6 to calm winds; it seems that the eye of Hurricane Charley passed right over us. By the time the race started, there were onshore winds to 40 and torrential downpours. Tough, toughening conditions. We had a blast.

My buddy Beth and I duked it out for the win; water cooled racing at it’s finest.
