At what temp do you need to wear socks in a race?

If you don’t usually wear socks on bike during a race, at what temperature would it be cold enough that you would wear socks? And, how cold for you to wear toe covers?

I understand personal preference would factor into answers, but looking for feedback from those who typically race without socks.

I ask because I’m planning my clothing options for IMLP 70.3 which I know has been very cold the past two years. Hopefully it won’t be as cold this year, but average low is 45F for race day, so I think morning temps in the mid to upper 40s would be a good day.

That is super interesting. I was signed up for IMLP 70.3, but I cannot go. Never thought about the cold factor.

For me, I ride with toe covers (and socks) below 50° F. However, I have never ridden sockless below about 80° F, so I have no experience of when my feet might get cold without socks. Also, below 50° F, I will also wear a vest and arm warmers.
