“The number of sunspots on the sun, and their intensity, varies in a cycle averaging 11 years. The distance between the sun and the earth keeps changing slightly and predictably because 1) they move on slightly varying paths through space; and 2) both bodies accelerate and decelerate constantly depending on the combined gravitational forces of the other big planets.
These factors apparently produce the moderate 1,500-year climate cycle on earth, which was discovered in the Greenland ice cores in 1980s and has since also been found globally in seabed and lake sediments, fossil pollen, tree rings and peat bogs.
Earth’s recent global warming occurred too early—before 1940—to be blamed on human CO2 emissions. The net global warming since 1940 is only 0.2 degrees C, with none at all since 1998. There’s little correlation between the earth’s recent temperatures and CO2 levels, but a strong correlation between the sunspot index and subsequent changes in our sea-surface temperatures.(note to self “no shit!!”)
The 1,500-year climate cycle shifts temperatures about 2 degrees C above and then 2 degrees C below the long-term average at the latitude of Washington and Paris, with greater temperature changes near the poles. Temperatures change little near the equator, but rainfall patterns can change greatly; for example, 5,000 years ago the Sahara was wet enough for grazing and hunting, while Kenya was very dry.”
I’d like to know how many "New"species are popping up. You know like the three headed tree frog and the the yellow winged beaver duck.
Can’t remember if it was here or someplace else, but someone posted a link to a person who drove thru the area on a motorcycle and took pics and documented them along the way…it was a bit eerie.
Too bad that the last warm period, known as the “Little Climatic Optimum” actually went from right around 850AD to 1350AD.
The warm period was enough to extend growing seasons in Northern Europe and through a chain of events, led to the Vikings eventually heading west, as far as Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and even as far south as the Carolinas, about 1000 years ago.
Besides “little correlation” means there is SOME correlation, meaning WE are at least partially responsible for the fine mess we’ve got ourselves into. (No sh*t Sherlock!)
Furthermore, even if you are right and CO2 emissions AREN’T contributing to global warming, so what. We still have it, and all the other effects of CO2 emissions aren’t doing us any good so we STILL need to cut them to reasonable/sustainable levels.

Just to be accurate, Correlation (no matter how big or small) does not mean causation.
hey man, great article !!! and written by such an “unbiased climate expert”, i mean, who would quibble with his hilarious conclusions? oops, thousands of expert climatiologists, that’s who.
went to a nuclear medicine conference this spring and one of the speakers was a scientist that had been to cherynobl on several occasions to determine the the fallout etc…his data was surprising in that there were relatively few deaths from radiation poisoning, and only a modest increase in radiation induced cancers since the disaster. Certainly not what the media has portrayed
“your delusional rantings are annoying enough in the LR and have NO place on the main page.”
First of all, relax. It’s an innocent mistake. Apparently I have become so delusional that I sometimes forget what forum I am looking at.
Secondly, my delusional rantings very much have a place in the main forum. Triathletes have far too much to worry about to execute a successful Ironman without worrying about the gayness of global warming. Many on this forum are self hating and guilt ridden over the consequences of their involvement in the sport.
Worrying about:
The “carbon cost of training and racing”, was my carbon fiber bike made with the finest child labor available? Did they earn a ‘living wage’? Will my use of C02 cartridges cause global warming? Thinking about all the resources that go into and waste that comes out of a large triathlon. Are those 1000’s of water bottles recycled? Are gel packs bio-degradable?
The guilt can be overwhelming for some……
So when I tell triathletes that the sun has more to do with global warming than human caused C02 emissions, I am providing a valuable public service to the Slowtwitch community. Since people are beginning to realize more and more that global warming is bullshit, they can focus more on things that they can control, such as their pacing, nutrition, heart-rate, wattage, equipment preparation and such. There is no longer a need to worry about “carbon footprint” bullshit……the mental space that kind of anxiety used to occupy is now freed up to focus on executing a successful race. In other words; “free your mind and your ass will follow.”
Profound as always. The master has branched out from providing the intellectual leadership to our foremost politicians to showing the way to our foremost triathletes as well.
Awesome mojo. You’re getting back to the author I have idolized for the last year or so.
I just hope nobody that agrees with what you wrote bothers to check out reality as I doubt they are as awesome as you and might not be able to handle it.
