Assault Weapon Ban

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=6960824&page=1

Yeah, banning assualt weapons in the US is really going to stop Mexican druglords from getting guns!

As to the idiotic nature of such proposals I offer the ST readers a quiz:

Which of the following would violate the assualt weapons ban? (note: this is for the previous existing law)

Today’s question:
Of the 16 firearms pictured below, how many were banned, or would be subject to being banned, from new manufacture or importation after the effective date of the “assault weapon” ban according to the provisions of that law? (NOTE : disregard magazine capacity)

I don’t see why they would even bother trying. I thought the Supreme Court pretty much slammed the door on this sort of ban when they killed off the DC handgun ban. Something along the lines of you can’t ban an entire class of weapons that have a legitimate, lawful use.

Next week they’re going to implement a ban on automobiles too.

That ought to keep criminals from using them in the commission of crimes.

That should drive (no pun intended) the 'ole crime rate right down!

I don’t trust D.C. I’ve lost faith.

Going into town to swim and then directly to the gun store. I’ve always wanted a few toys and I intend to spend the $$ now - this will include a few thousand rounds for the stash.

I’ve had it with these bastards. The “assualt rifle” rumor is merely the last straw.

Hey, you can still buy that deer (ie “sniper”) rifle.

You do realize this same ban was in place until 2004 right? Was your faith gone at that time too? But then returned for the last 4 years?

Exactly…boudreaux’s response is typical of these folks who believes everything the NRA tells them. The NRA’s have been screaming for years and years that the government will legislate the second amendment away, that the military will come and forcibly remove your guns from you, etc., etc. After awhile you would think people would wise up to their propaganda.

Its a common thing though…I know ever since the inauguration there has been a run on ammo, guns and things like AR15 conversion kits. A buddy told me that we went to a gun show and pretty much every merchant was saying “Buy it before Obama takes it away”

Hey, whatever you can do to make a sale…

Its called stimulus.

Yep. Gun sales of all types went through the roof here just after the election and just before the swearing in.

I can’t believe that Obama has been in office over a month and he still hasn’t come after our guns and bibles.

all okay, no?

isn’t it a combo of bayonet lug, flash suppressor, pistol grip, collapsible stock and removable magazine that “defines” an assault weapon?

Of the 16 firearms pictured below, how many were banned, or would be subject to being banned,

Let me guess - none of them?

The assault weapons bill was authored by politicians that were ignorant about firearms and attempted to identify bad guns based on features that were more cosmetic than functional.
Bill Ruger (Chairman at the time of Strum, Ruger Firearms) suggested that this approach was futile and that it would be more effective to limit magazine capacity.
This caused an uproar among many gunowners when his suggestion was implemented. He smoothed things over with the NRA by establishing a million dollar endowment.

.

Nope, I still had a modicum of faith. My ass is burning now, for whatever reason, and I’ve had enough.

Just bought 2,000 rounds of .223 and ordered a semi-auto rifle I’ve always wanted.

I don’t blindly follow NRA “propaganda”; you don’t know me well enough to make statements such as the one you made.

Type that with a pencil?

And just when is an assault legitimate and lawful?

Nope I don’t know you but I wasn’t making a statement about you. I was talking about your response which in turned reminded of those folks who believe anything the NRA says. I really don’t care if you follow your NRA propaganda or not…your actions say enough…

Ya’ll don’t get it do you. Much to your chagrin, we have a right to own guns. The term “assault rifle” is a misnomer coined to inflame emotion.

Much as I dislike your position, should the shit ever hit the fan, you may stand in safety behind me as I have no problem raising a weapon in anger towards those who may do my family harm.

In the meantime, I’ll continue to hunt, shoot cans and vermin on my property.

Good grief, learn how to shoot and you won’t need so many rounds.

Relying solely on my off-the-cuff recollection on mil history I will answer your question from a Mil History point of view. You’re differentiating between: Main Battle Rifles (MBRs); Assault Rifles; and Sub-Machineguns–none to be confuse with EBRs (evil black rifles) Mainly the difference lies in caliber, magazine capacity, and intended usage. Main Battle Rifles use “full power” cartridges and are generally capable of engaging man-sized targets well past 300m but are very difficult (if not impossible) to control under fully automatic fire. The first modern “Assault Rifle” is most commonly ascribed to the STG44–designed by the German armaments industry in WWII–it used a smaller cartridge (so you could carry a lot more bullets in your magazine and upon your person in your basic load). Also the smaller cartridge gave you much more of an ability to control the weapon under very rapid semi-auto (or full auto) fire. The cartridge was smaller than that of a MBR but greater than that of a pistol cartridge–so Assault Rifles generally have a range of up to 300m. The difference in usage was that, whereas a rifleman with a MBR would try to directly engage and kill his counterpart with aimed fire from a distance; the rifleman with an assault rifle would use his extra bullets and increased volume of fire to “suppress” his counterpart and move to a position of closer range and advantage to finish him off.

Meanwhile, (leaping back in history) to help break the trench stalemate of WWI (again those feisty Germans) had led the way with the invention of the first successful mass production machine pistol. This gave high firepower (albeit with pistol cartridges–in this case 9mm) for very close range fighting. It was part of a technology/doctrinal/tactical revolution that they used to break the Western Front open in an attempt to win the war in 1918.

This would all be from what most would say is a purist (or pendantic) point of view.

Modern examples would be:

Main Battle Rifle: Springfield Armory M1A; FN/FAL; G3; M14
Assault Rifles: M4 carbine; M16; Galil; AK-74
Machine Pistol: Uzi, M2 Grease Gun, Thompson.

What a relief.
